A pimple is a type of blocked hair pore in the skin. Inside the follicles, there are sebaceous or oil glands. These glands produce sebum (an oily substance which lubricates skin and hair). The dead skin cells become glued when they come into contact with sebum. This causes clogging inside the pore which causes a pimple. Although pimples can occur at any age, they are most likely to occur around puberty because the skin becomes thicker during adolescence. Our face, back, shoulders and chest are loaded with sebaceous glands. Therefore, these areas are most affected with pimples. The different types of pimples are listed below:-

? Whiteheads (closed comedo) - These appear as flesh-coloured papules which remain under the skin.

? Blackheads (open comedo) - these are black or brown coloured pimples which are clearly visible on the skin.

? Papules- these are small, pink bumps which arise from the skin.

? Pustules- these are clearly visible on the skin often filled with pus on the top. The base is red.

? Nodules- these are larger than papules and are painful.

? Cysts- these are the scar causing pimples. They are painful and filled with pus.
