import-export code, also known as the import-export licence, is a 10 digit alphanumeric code. Basically, it is the PAN number of the applicant has been given by the concerned authorities after the submission of the IEC application form. As it is related to the PAN of an applicant, it will always be unique for each application. Moreover, only one IEC code can be issued against one PAN.

The issuing authority of import-export licence is given to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. No other department can generate the IEC code other than DGFT.

Before applying for IEC code, the applicant must gather the necessary documents required for IEC code.

Documents required for IEC code :

  1. The applicant should have a passport size photograph.

  2. A copy of Permanent Account Number.

  3. Identity proof such as Aadhaar card, voter id, DL.

  4. Cancelled cheque with applicant’s name and account number or else Bank certificate.

In order to gain the IEC code, an IEC application form has to be submitted to the DGFT office.

Steps for IEC online application form

  1. Firstly, you have to open the website of DGFT. You can find it here http://dgft.gov.in/

  2. Then find the IEC application form that you have to fill and submit.

  3. Before the form could appear, details of PAN card must be entered.

  4. After that, the personal details of the candidate should be submitted.

  5. After inputting the personal details, the required documents must be uploaded for verification.

  6. When all the documents are submitted and reference id is generated, then the IEC licence fees should be paid.

  7. At the last, the application form has to be submitted online to the DGFT website.

There is also an offline mode to apply for IEC code. An applicant can visit the nearest DGFT office to collect the IEC application form. Thereby, after attaching all the needed documents, the form can be submitted to the same nearest authorized office.
