When someone makes the decision to have bariatric surgery, they do so with the understanding that this commitment - while challenging - can ultimately save their life. They may have struggled with weight their entire lives, have been on countless diets, suffered the many physical implications of their obesity in the form of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions. In the end - after years of struggle and having not reached their weight loss goals although they have tried many different plans - they may understand that without weight loss surgery, they are at risk for ongoing and life-threatening complications. They understand that through weight loss surgery, they will have the tools they need to finally lose the weight once and for all and get healthy.

In the preparation for surgery, most people educate themselves about what to expect before and during surgery - as well as what to expect in terms of recovery. But part of what must be understood following surgery is what to expect in terms of results. Your doctor will talk to you about managing your expectations; what you can expect to see as far as weight loss both short term and long term.

Most important to remember is that every person is different. That’s why it’s so important to work with your doctor to understand what to expect from your particular procedure and from your body. Your doctor will talk to you about what kind of weight loss you may see initially and throughout the months to come.

Secondly, it is crucial to understand that bariatric surgery provides a tool for weight loss. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you use that tool. Weight loss surgery does not address the emotional component of obesity. To be successful - and see the results you expect - it is up to you to address that very important emotional component and put your new lifestyle into affect including good nutrition and ongoing exercise.
