We have confronted butchers many times. All that appears is them going slaughtering, cutting, dressing and selling meat. They are the people who spend their entire lives with tons of meat. We barely spend a few minutes with them because our trip to butchery is mainly about selecting a desired kind of meat, interrogating about its quality and paying for it. As soon as we leave the butchery we don’t even remember whom we confronted it. Unless it is someone we know personally we don’t realize what the butchers’ life is like. These are the people who provide us with one of the most important parts of our diet so that we can cherish our food and put our health into a healthy frame.

Here is a short account of the trivial details from a butcher’s life. You might find them very surprising. Read them while keeping your nearest butcher in mind.

Is the part of slaughtering easy? Many of us think that butchers are merciless people who have no pity for animals. They slash their throats very cruelly. The reality is that butchers are also humans. They also care about animals. But it is their job to slaughter them and provide their meat to you. Butchers are trained and skilled enough to do it in a very expert manner so that the animals suffer the least possible pain. They calm down the animal and then slaughter them so that their nerves are calm, and they don’t get scared. With time the trauma for butchers minimizes but the humanity in them never dies. They might get used to the environment but getting to killing is not possible.

For how long do butchers work? The job of butchers is very hectic. The working hours vary from country to country. They barely get a day off. In seasons of festivity, meat is the most important ingredient for most of the dishes, so the workload gets doubled. On average, they work 40 hours per week. They get physically and well mentally tired because of their constant working. 40 hours sometimes increase up to 50 hours such as on holidays and important occasions or special bookings, but they don’t get less.

Problems in the life of butchers: Every profession has a long list of problems tied with it. Similarly, butchery also comes with some problems. Firstly, butchers constantly work with physical force because of which they get physically tired. Continuous cutting and dressing of meat drain their energy. Secondly, butchers have to face the worst kind of injuries. The heavy knives they use while chopping ribs cut their own fingers which gives them immense loss. They are at risk of losing their job. In areas where there is no check on cleanliness butchers are at a high risk of falling sick severely because of the contaminated atmosphere. They have no option other than making a quick recovery. An atmosphere which is polluted with bacteria, walls wilting with mold and careless drainage of blood there is a high probability that with every passing day the immunity of butchers weakens. This puts them into huge danger.

Financial status: Since butchers work 40 or more hours every week they are too tired to make any contribution to a stable personal life. Also, they are usually underpaid because of which it takes a lot of effort to lead a life free of financial worries.

After going through the reality of butchers it is obvious that the majority don’t know about them. They are service-providing people who also have a life of their own but that hides somewhere in the butcheries and slaughterhouses.
