Several types of scales are available for different types of weight measurement. But for weighing trucks, two types of scales used; pin load scales and full length truck scales. The difference is axle load scales can weigh one or two axles and full length truck scales can weigh the whole truck at a time. Full length truck scales may be portable or permanent fixing whereas Axle load scales are less expensive and are subject to certain errors.

Portable truck scales are usually placed on anequipped surface such as concrete slab, wooden beams or even dirt and slopes are placed at either end for access. The biggest advantage of Portable scales is it is easy to move from one site to another and is ideal for workers or road constructors. They are more expensive due to lesser framework. Scales that are permanently mounted either in a pit or of an above-ground low outline design where the scale is equipped on a concrete slab with ramps at either end. Advantages of Pit type scale are: There is no necessity for entry and exit inclines, snow will not be gatheredunder the platform and easier access to the bottom of the scale. The rate of a pit type scale is greater because of the increased cost of archaeological site and pit construction.

Check Rod restraint does not require any maintenance and does not allow movement in weighbridge. There are two weighing capacities associated with truck scales. One is nominal capacity which can measure upto200,000 pounds; more than sufficient to weigh highway trucks. The other being concentrated load capacity which can weigh about 2,000 pounds and can vary from 20 tons upto 50 tons.
