Facing a boiler breakdown, especially during the cold season, can be a horrible experience. sometimes the unexpected can happen even if you have checked your boiler before the cold weather has arrived and everything seemed to work perfectly. There are a few common causes that can stop your boiler from working properly or cause its breakdown including frozen plumbing, a mechanical breakdown, or simply because your boiler is too old.

Try resetting it

When your boiler seems to not work properly or breaks down, sometimes all it needs is a simple reset. If your boiler has locked out or it keeps displaying an error, you need to find the reset button and try resetting it. Usually, the reset button is located somewhere on the front control panel. Check the boiler manual and follow the instructions step by step to reset it. However, the error might hide a bigger problem. So, although resetting it might be a good temporary solution, you should still ask an engineer to check it to ensure there is no serious problem that might put you and your family in danger.

Check your thermostat settings

Sometimes, the thermostat of your boiler may cause the entire system to not function properly. For example, you may notice that your boiler doesn’t fire up or it doesn’t come on when it should. Often, during power cuts, the settings of the thermostat such as the timer may have been changed. Check if the settings of the thermostat are exactly as you have previously set them and if not try to increase the temperature to see if that helps and makes your boiler come on.

Check for a frozen condensate pipe

Frozen plumbing is the most common cause of a boiler breakdown during winter. The existing water in the pipes and in the boiler freeze during cold weather, especially when the temperatures drop below zero. Thus, the problem that may prevent your boiler from working properly can be the frozen condensate pipe.

Seek professional advice

If you have tried to reset your boiler and determine what caused its breakdown but still couldn’t make it work again, it is better to seek professional advice. An engineer will be able to tell you exactly what is the problem with the boiler and whether it can be fixed or needs replacement.

Find a temporary solution

When your boiler stops working during the cold season, you need to find a temporary solution quick in order to ensure the right temperature in your home environment. You and your family need to have a warm and cozy temperature inside your house to avoid illnesses specific to cold temperatures such as flu or fever. But how can you deal with such an emergency situation as soon as possible? Boiler rentals can be your best shot as a temporary solution. Buying a new boiler can take a lot of time to find the right one for your home and to install it. Thus, renting a boiler until the weather starts getting warmer is the best solution to keep your house as a healthy and warm environment for your family.
