It costs little, no firearms are needed, but its effectiveness can be compared to that of a pistol, with the difference that it has no lethal effects. Since 2011, the purchase of stinging spray has become legal, and since then requests for self-defense have increased.

1. The different types of self-defense sprays and their effects

Self-defense sprays, although numerous in terms of brands are generally composed of either capsaicin (the active chemical compound of pepper or pepper considered to be the most effective named OC), chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) or chloroacetophenone(CN). It is therefore not gas, but rather a liquid in which these particles are suspended.

  • CN and CS spray: Sprays containing chloroacetophenone or chlorobenzylidene malononitrile cause irritating effects to the eyes and an intense burning sensation. This substance acts 5 to 30 seconds after exposure and will make your target cry.
  • OC sprays: OC sprays are not composed of irritating but inflammatory agents. Its exposure causes transient blindness and breathing difficulties. It is probably one of the most effective weapons to stop an attacker.

The effectiveness of self-defense sprays

Your aggressors are not always in the same psychological state, or physical, and are not necessarily human: can we use a pepperguard against a fighting dog?

CN and CS sprays take time to act. 5 to 30 seconds, during an attack, can indeed represent an eternity. If the latter remain effective against animals, the effectiveness is, on the other hand, to question the drug addicts or people under the effect of alcohol. They do not feel the pain instantly, and your spray will be useless.

OC sprays are much more effective for people under the influence of alcohol or drugs. That said, if the wind rises, it could be that you have affected yourself and you will have to hope to recover faster than your attacker.

It is one of the best options as self-defense weapons because they fit easily in pockets or hooked in one of the clips of jeans. So, if at some point we are in danger, like being cornered by a thief, we will be able to use the spray quickly to escape. This gas, when in contact with the skin, causes a strong irritation, a sensation of intense heat, as if something was burning. In addition, the sensation extends over time, and it becomes difficult to get rid of it completely.

How to use a self-defense spray?

You have to act quickly and use the best safety technique for women, the process is not very complicated. Once your attacker is less than a meter away, take the spray out of your pocket or bag, taking care to remove the cover (all models do not have one) so that the spray is ready for use. Hold the spray with your steady hand and use the other to block the sight and aim straight. Aim for your target at the level of the face, preferably around the eyes, making circular movements to avoid a possible hand used as protection.
