Education is the only panacea to end the vicious cycle of poverty-hunger-illiteracy – it wouldn’t be wrong to say this! World leaders and thinkers have time and again stressed upon the need of educating children.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."– Nelson Mandela

  • Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another." - G.K. Chesterton
  • He who opens a school door, closes a prison." - Victor Hugo
  • are some of the thoughts that indeed inspire us to do something but unless acted upon, nothing can change. Several NGOs across the globe are relentlessly working towards the cause of education and food and among them is The Akshaya Patra Foundation that provides ‘food for education’ to children in India.

Akshaya Patra in a nutshell

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a non-profit organisation in India working for children since 2000. It implements the Mid-Day Meal Programme in a Public-Private Partnership model. The Foundation has been rigorously working towards supporting education of each and every child by providing nutrition-rich school meals. As of now, Akshaya Patra provides daily school meals to:

1,762,133 CHILDREN

IN 15,024 SCHOOLS

ACROSS 42 LOCATIONS

IN 12 STATES OF INDIA.

Early on Akshaya Patra realised the incentivising factor attached with the school meals as majority of its beneficiaries hailed from challenging socio-economic backgrounds where availability of food is the main concern. It was observed that most parents send their children to school due to the provision of free school meals. However once at school, the children automatically get involved with academic and co-curricular learning.

The life-changing impact of education

Taking our own lives as example, would we have reached where we are today without education? The formal schooling, we received during our growing years, honed us with academic knowledge, talent development, and the much-needed confidence of being able to achieve. It opened up a plethora of opportunities for us to shape our own futures. It is this truth that drives Akshaya Patra to provide food for education to as many children as possible who face countless hurdles just to reach school. By providing the nutritious meals, Akshaya Patra wants to open the gates of school for each child right from the grass root level.

Education also nurtures children by giving them the chance to explore possibilities of achieving their aspirations – a vital aspect that boosts hope of children that their aspirations are achievable and that better days are in the horizon.

What’s your role in education of children?

Being a non-profit organisation working for children, Akshaya Patra has also initiated a handful of child-centric programmes to support holistic development of its beneficiaries. The programmes include:

  • Anganwadi feeding programme
  • Scholarship programme
  • Talent development programme
  • Student and school transformation programme

When you sponsor a child through Akshaya Patra, you ensure nutrition, education, and talent development of the child – the key factors required for proper growth and development of a child.

In conclusion, your one step today to sponsor a child will empower the child with health, education, and skill making them resourceful and independent citizens of the country in the near future.
