Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) refers to a framework which helps in monitoring and controlling processes in an organization. Over the years, SCADA systems have evolved with the introduction of modern IT standards and practices, such as SQL, web-based applications, cloud computing, mobility, data virtualization, big data and analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT). These systems are crucial for various sectors where they help to process data for smarter decisions and communicate system issues to help mitigate downtime, thereby improving the security, productivity, reliability and efficiency of operations. According to IMARC Group, the global SCADA market size reached US$ 18.6 Billion in 2018.

Global SCADA Market Trends

SCADA systems offer the ability to monitor various parameters like current/voltage and to report in case of failures and analytics for proactive or predictive maintenance. This has made SCADA an ideal solution for the implementation of various industrial automation based IoT projects. As a result, the demand for these systems is increasing from multiple industries. For instance, in the power industry, SCADA provides real-time visibility of remote plants and provides online data, histories and alarms. It also controls the wind turbines during start-up, power production, shutdown and faulty cases. Similarly, the SCADA system helps in maintaining the refrigeration systems at the supermarkets, ensuring production and safety at refineries, achieving quality standards at wastewater treatment plants, and even tracking energy usage at homes. It offers faster and more reliable communication infrastructure. Moreover, the advent of cloud computing and IoT has made the transfer of real-time information as well as control of remote assets over long distances possible. As a result of these factors, the global SCADA market is expected to reach a value of around US$ 26 Billion by 2024, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.7% during 2019-2024.

Market Breakup by Component

On the basis of the component, the market has been segmented into programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), human machine interface (HMI), communication systems and others. PLC is ideal for situations where more local control is required, such as a factory setting. PLCs are digital computers which are specially designed for output arrangements and multiple inputs. Sometimes they are used in place of RTUs because of their versatility. RTUs are electronic devices controlled by a microprocessor that transmit information via wireless communication and are considered best for performing functions covering a broad geographical area. HMI is a device that allows an individual to view and interact with the collected and processed data. In most cases, this is done through a graphical presentation, such as a computer monitor. This interface is often used to perform tasks like collecting data, making reports, and sending out notifications.

Market Breakup by Architecture

On the basis of the architecture, the market has been categorized into software, hardware and services. SCADA hardware includes master terminal unit (MTU) which is placed in a central location, communication equipment such as telephone line, radio, cable, or satellite, and one or more RTUs or PLCs which are placed at geographically distributed field sites. SCADA software performs the functions of storing and accessing the acquired data, calculating parameters’ acceptable range, responding to parameter violations, generating alarms, providing HMI, and reporting and accounting. Apart from this, SCADA provides faster and prioritized service restoration that creates a more resilient and reliable infrastructure.

Oil and Gas represent the largest end user

The oil and gas industry majorly uses SCADA systems as they can handle the complex processes required to operate in oilfields efficiently. These control systems provide a stable and cost-effective solution for the needs of the oil and gas sector. Some of the other end users include power, water and wastewater, manufacturing, chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and others.

North America exhibits a clear dominance in the industry

Currently, North America enjoys the leading position in the global SCADA market, holding the largest market share. Other major regions include Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East and Africa.

Some of the key players operating in the market are ABB Ltd., Emerson Electric Co., Rockwell Automation, Inc., Schneider Electric SE, Siemens AG, Alstom, General Electric Co., Honeywell International, Inc., Omron Corporation, Yokogawa Electric Corporation, Iconics Inc., Elynx Technologies, LLC, Enbase LLC, Globalogix and Inductive Automation.
