What is a Solar Charger?

A solar charger has a self-explanatory name, it is a type of charger that uses solar energy to supply electricity to devices and batteries. They tend to be portable and easy to use. Solar chargers are capable of charging lead acid and Ni-Cd battery banks up to 48 V and has a capacity of hundreds of ampere hours, up to 4000Ah. A single solar cell can produce one or two watts of electricity, and multiple cells can power a battery.

How Does it Work?

To understand how solar energy is converted into electricity, we need to take a look at interactions between photons and electrons.

Electricity is created by the movement of free electrons which carry a negative charge. We all know these orbit around the nucleus of an atom, and it takes some amount of energy to kick it out of orbit. The particle of energy that can do that is the photon, energy particle that is responsible for creating light. Photons can be used to knock out electrons loose from the element silicon, which is the material used in most solar cells.

There is now an imbalance between positively charged and negatively charged particles in the silicon by using boron and phosphorus. This imbalance is what creates and electrical field in silicon. After the electrons come loose, the electrical field pushes them to the front of the solar cell that creates a negatively charged side, and protons left behind create a positively charged side, and when these two sides are connected using an external load, electrons flow into the load and creates electricity.

Why you Should Switch to Solar Charging

Here are some of the many benefits of switching to solar charging:

1. Clean energy

Solar panels generate completely clean energy, by not consuming any fuel and not generating any waste. There aren’t any moving parts so it does not make noise either. It's the easiest to use because all you need to do is keep the solar panel in the sun and reap the benefits.

2. Battery life

Solar panels generate pure D.C. electricity, which exactly what you want for your batteries. By saturating your batteries with these electrons slowly on a daily basis, you can prevent repetitive deep discharges that shorten the lifespan of lead acid batteries.

3. Electrical independence

With an appropriate system you could do away with the worries of finding shore power or running your generator. A portable system can be taken anywhere with you, into the desert, mountains, beaches and practically anywhere you can get sunlight.

4. Low maintenance

There is nothing people love more than something that does not require effort to maintain. Solar charging provides exactly that to their users. Since there is no fuel consumption or moving parts, there are consequently no air, oil or fuel filters to change. All you need to do is keep the surface of the panels clean.

5. Safe and reliable

Wherever there is sunlight, there is electricity, all thanks to solar charging.

So, while buying a solar inverter system next time, don’t forget to keep these aspects in mind.
