After successfully completing their Driving Lessons in Barnet North London and finally getting their driver’s permits, new drivers often experience one of two feelings. First is excitement to finally use what they learned in the QVG Driving School in Barnet North London on the road and the second is nervousness.

No matter what a new driver is feeling there is one common fear we all share: driving in the rain. Even the best students at the QVG driving school in Barnet North London need to exert caution during rainy days. Remember to follow these tips to reduce the number of accidents on the road:

1 - Check The Lights

Remember to always check that all vehicle lights are functioning properly before driving off into the rain. These lights will keep you visible to other cars on the road, even when the rain is at its thickest.

2 - Replace Dull Lights

In case one or more of the lights look dull, replace them as soon as possible. If you can do this task at home, do so. If not, make the mechanic your first stop.

3 - Brake Earlier

Roads tend to be slippery during the rain, hence the need to step on the brakes sooner. Don’t wait until you can see the rear end of the other car or you might end up hitting their bumper due to the extra water on the road.

4 - Gentle Braking Is More Than Enough

DO NOT step on the brakes too hard as this can lead to hydroplaning, which is your vehicle sliding on a wet surface after stepping on the brakes. Nice gentle tapping is all that is needed to ensure the car comes to a safe and complete stop.

5 - Maintain A Good Grip

Whether it is sunny or rainy out, maintaining a good grip on the steering wheel helps you react faster in case of an accident.

6 - Keeping Control When Skidding

Slippery roads and sharp turns tend to end up with the car skidding. Do not panic when this happens. Just remember to steer in the same direction as the skid and not against it.

7 - High-Speed Wipers

It takes very little effort on the driver’s part to use wipers. Simply put them on the highest speed so that the rain won’t affect your visibility.

8 - Reduce Speed

During your driving lessons in Barnet North London you will learn that high speed and rain do not mix. It is best to lower your speed to at least 10km/h to lessen the chances of getting involved in an accident.

9 - Use The Defroster

If your vehicle comes equipped with a defroster, use it! This is the best way to combat fog that can diminish visibility.

10 - Stay Focused

Do not use your phone, do not engage in rowdy behaviour, and avoid getting distracted while driving under rain showers. Your full attention should be on the road, as one second can mean the difference between avoiding an accident and causing one.

11 - Maintain A Good Distance

When stuck in a traffic jam, ensure there is more than enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. The extra space is insurance in case your car rolls a few inches due to the slippery road.
