What is the difference between the "Internet of Things" (IoT) and "Machine to Machine" (M2M)?

M2M systems make use of point-to-point communications between sensors, machines and hardware over wired or cellular networks, while IoT systems rely on IP-based networks to deliver data collected from IoT-connected devices to the cloud, gateways or middleware platforms.
