SEO or search engine optimization is one of the best arsenal one can have when doing online marketing. It is the method of achieving higher rankings and thus positions in the search engine results page. The more rankings you have, the better positions you will be at and this brings more customers to your website.
If you are not familiar with the methods and techniques applied, SEO can get very challenging because it involves a lot of things. However with good practice, SEO can be a big boon to your business. Not everybody is adept at optimizing websites and it can thus lead to terrible results. a) More links are better: This is something that is very commonly seen and heard. You will find a lot of self proclaimed experts saying that the more links you collect over a period of time, your site will be favoured by Google and other search engines and thus will start ranking. This is not true at all. It does not depends on the number of links. You may have a lot of links coming from websites that are filled with other links and it will not do you any favour.
b) Filling your content with keywords: Again, this was a practice done by many SEO "experts". You would find many pieces of contents and articles filled with a keyword that they want to rank for. For example, if the business wanted to rank for "car cleaning", almost every second word was this word. It would read like this: if you are looking for car cleaning service, we are the best car cleaning service in the city. So if you want car cleaning service, call us and you will be satisfied with our car cleaning service.
As you can see, it is very unnatural and will only bring about damage to your website. Not to mention that the readers will be upset as well. They may simply close the browser never to return to your website but may also bring about bad reputation to your website that will surely be very harmful to your business.
c) Higher page rank means that your page will be more visible: This is again another myth that your visibility of the search engine will depend on your page rank. Page rank is a minor factor among the 200 other factors Google sees to rank a page. Instead you must focus on providing content and build quality backlinks. There are many other ways to get higher and better rankings. So don't just focus on increasing page rank because it will not be worth your time and efforts.
d) Redirecting sites: Another technique applied by SEO guys is to redirect another domain to the actual domain to increase ranking. Although this works but ensure that it is not done too often and isn't blatantly done. You cannot have a site redirected by just a link with no content on the site itself. Google doesn't appreciate this and will come after you sooner or later.
There are many other aspects of SEO but keep these in mind while you're doing it. Avoid black hat techniques to save your peace of mind and sanity.
