Engine Oil Pan Market for Automotive: Growth Opportunities & Technology Developments by 2026
Posted: Aug 10, 2019
The Engine Oil Pan is a vital part of engine cooling system it collects the engine oil and re-circulates it to the engine with an oil pump. The Oil Pan are also required to contribute to stiffness of engine and transmission part. The oil pan is a sealed unit to prevent the contamination of engine oil. OEM’s often require the oil pan to hold the weight of engine and transmission. The oil pans are designed to sustain high temperature of 110 degree-120 degree to sustain hot engine oil temperature.
There is an increase in demand for oil pan with more volume so as it can hold more oil and minimize the oil refill needs thus reducing the servicing visits. The CaCI2 road salts is used more in Japan, China, Korea and Russia which is more eroding than the conventional NACI2 thus eroding the engine oil pans and increasing their aftermarket demand. The emphasis on fuel savings and CO2 emission has led to development of composite plastic engine oil pans. The composite plastic engine oil pans can hold 30% more oil, is 1db quieter, and weighs 50% less than the traditional metal engine oil pans. During a uphill climb the engine performance is sacrificed due to the engine oil level in the pan not reaching the oil pump. The engine oil pan designed by BASF and MAHLE in 2009 could channel the oil even during 60% grade. The demand for performance-based vehicle is likely to boost the demand for engine oil pans with articulate rib structure and grooves to facilitate oil at all times.
The composite is a cheaper material as compared to metal and thus there is a significant price difference in the metal and composite engine oil pans. With growing standard demand and need of quieter vehicles the engine oil pan are designed to absorb the maximum engine noise and vibration. Rise in vehicle production is expected to fuel the demand of the engine oil pans in the near future.
The global engine oil pan market can be segmented based on material, manufacturing process, sales channel and geography. By material, the oil pans are made of three materials, aluminum, composite plastic and other. Aluminum has a dominating market share in the engine oil market. The development of composite technology and awareness about light weighting is likely to surge the demand for composite plastic oil pans. The composite plastic being more economical with its added advantages of noise reduction, more strength is expected to fuel its demand against the metal counterpart.
By manufacturing process, the engine oil pan market can be divided into three process. The casting process holds a dominant market share owing to the casted metal being stiffer. Aluminum material is used for casting.
By sales channel, the engine oil pan market is segmented under OEM and Aftermarket. The OEM has a strong presence and is expected to hold a major share. The rise in production of vehicles is to further fuel the demand of OEM engine oil pans. The aftermarket segment is also a significant contributor to the global engine oil market. The under body scrapping due to hitting of stones & corrosion due to salts are major causes for rise in demand of aftermarket engine oil pans.
By vehicle, the engine oil pan market is segmented under passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle. The rise in production of passenger vehicle in Asia-Pacific and Europe is expected to boost the engine oil pan market in the region.
