bathroom remodelling

Renovating a room can be a daunting process, especially when we are talking about the bathroom. Why is it this way? This room is supposed to be the place where you relax and unwind, it should be practical, serene and a little bit luxurious. But to make it look this way, you have to make hundreds of decisions and some of them may sound surprising. Did you know that you have to decide how the grout will be?

So how do you know where to start? Well, this is our piece of advice.

The contractor may not share your concept

The greatest mistake would be to assume that the contractor could guess how you want your bathroom to look. If you don’t spell out the plan and you don’t share with them the details of the project, it’s very unlikely to get the result that you want.

Bathroom remodelling is a process similar to a surgery if the doctor removes the wrong tooth they cannot place it back. Well, with bathrooms, they can fix the mistakes but it will bring extra expenses and work.

Bathroom remodelling can be expensive

Have you determined how much you are willing to pay for a bathroom remodel? Great, now you should add an extra 10% at the initial sum because these projects tend to be expensive. The average cost is around $11,000, and if you use cheaper materials, it can vary from $1,500 to $6,000. When choosing high quality materials the entire renovation process will probably cost more than $20,000.

The plumbing and fixtures are the most expensive parts of the project, you will spend around 30% of your budget on buying and installing them. Then you will probably spend around 20% of the budget on surfaces and counters and around 15% on hardware and cabinetry. You should not try to save money with it comes to hiring professional plumbers because all installations must work flawlessly.

Freestanding bathtubs are not the most practical options

When remodelling their bathrooms, most of the homeowners choose to install a freestanding bathtub. But if you will think your decision thoroughly, you will understand that it’s not the most practical decision, especially if you have a small bathroom. A freestanding bathtub is a great solution for a large space or for the people who want to soak in the water and take long baths daily. Showers are a better solution if you are always on the run or you want to make the most of a petite room.

The grout changes the look of the bathroom

No one likes to check out models of grout, but because it can make or break your bathroom, you have to make sure you choose one that fits into the overall scheme. It’s not the most thrilling part of the process but it requires great attention because it can seal water and dirt and ruin the entire design.

Before choosing it, you have to answer to some questions: Do you want to install it in a high-splash zone? Do you want it to stand out when you enter the room? Do you want to install it all over the room? Synthetic grout is perfect for wet areas, and cementitious one for the rest of the bathroom. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time cleaning the grout you should choose something else than white.

Storage is important

People often focus on designing a serene bathroom, but they forget that this space should also be functional. A functional bathroom is a bathroom that has plenty of storage space so you have to exploit all the storage opportunities it offers. Even a small room comes with storage possibilities if you think it ahead. It’s important to make the storage feel integrated if you don’t want it to ruin the aesthetics of the room. It’s recommended to install tall cabinets hidden in a stud bay. Bathrooms don’t need deep shelves, shallow ones are just right.

Install a durable floor

For this room of the house it’s essential to install durable and water-resistant flooring. Marble, ceramic and stone are the best choices. The bathroom floor is highly used daily, and water spills can easily damage it if not installed properly. A well-sealed floor is an essential part of a functional bathroom, so you should research and decide what the best material is.

Don’t get lost in the countless types of tiles available on the market

The contractor will probably show you hundreds of types of tiles, but stick to the traditional ones. You should remember some key characteristics they should have, they have to be timeless, hardy, long-wearing and stylish. The main types of tile available on the market are: glass, natural stone, porcelain, and cement. Once you know the colour and shape you prefer, everything gets easy.
