Pitru Paksha is considered an inauspicious occasion by Hindus. In this occasion, it has given the death rite to the ancestors, which is known as Shraddha or Pind Daan. In western and south India, this pitru paksha falls in 2nd paksha (fortnight) Hindu lunar Month or Bhadrapada (September) and immediately follows the fortnight after the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This starts on the first day of the fortnight, known as Pratipada and ending with no moon day, known as Sarvapitri amavasya, Peddala amavasya, Mahalaya amavasya or simply Mahalaya. In this occasion, most people come to Varanasi for doing Pind Daan of their ancestors. As per the Hinduism, the souls of three previous generations of one’s ancestor reside in Pitru-Loka, which is a realm between the earth and heaven. This realm is governed by the death god Yama, who takes the soul of dying man from the earth to pitru loka. When a person dies from the next generation, the first generation shifts to heaven and combines with God. So, Shraddha is not given. Likewise, only three generations are given Shraddha in Pitru Loka, in which Yama plays a very important role. According to the best pandit in Varanasi who has great knowledge in Hindu epics, at the starting of Pitru Paksha, the sun enters into the zodiac sign of Virgo (Kanya). It is believed that at this moment, the spirits leave the pitru Loka and reside in the homes of their descendants for a month till the sun enters into the next zodiac sign Scorpio (Vrichchhika) and there is a full moon. Hindus are expected to satisfy the ancestors in the first half, at the time of dark fortnight. In this occasion of pitru paksha, many people come Varanasi for performing Shraddh. You can easily get pandits for pitru pooja in Varanasi or pandits for asthi visarjan through Tirth Purohit.

Another Katha is there for this pind daan. In the Mahabharat war, when the legendary donor Karna died and his soul transcended to heaven, he was offered by gold and jewels rather than real food. When Karna asked Indra, the lord of heaven for real food, Indra told to Karna that all his life he donated only gold and jewellery to his ancestors in Shradhha. Karna replied that since he didn’t know about his ancestors, he never offered anything in their memory. Then Indra permitted Karna to return to the earth for 15 days so that he could do Shradhha and donate food and water to his ancestors. This period is known as Pitru Pakshtira.
