No matter how much we keep our homes clean and hygienic, we are vulnerable to the threats of mosquitoes and flies coming from the outside environment. Mosquitos and flies can be an annoyance if they buzz around in your households in huge numbers. They also possess several health risks as certain kinds of flies are known to transmit fatal diseases like dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera, and dengue.

The fatal disease

On the other hand, mosquitoes have now become one of the most dreaded insects to deal with in present times. Mosquitoes are attributed to the spread of malaria, chikungunya, and Dengue Fever. They are known to affect adults and children alike and have been fatal on many occasions.

An estimated 220 million cases of malaria were documented in 2017 alone and it occurred in around 87 countries around the world. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 0.5 million in the year 2017. India alone accounted for 9.5 million cases in 2017 with the state of Odisha contributing nearly 25 % of the country's total malaria cases.

Prevention

Disease caused by mosquitoes, such as malaria, chikungunya, and Dengue Fever is avoidable and treatable. While vector control remains the primary way to reduce malaria transmission with its action mainly on the environment outside the home within specific areas, homes and communities are still vulnerable to the threat.

Two significant forms of protection from mosquitoes and flies are the insecticide-treated mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying.

DIY products are readily available in stores to kill flies and mosquitoes. However, it is seen that in most cases, it is not effective. They may then require professional pest control to ensure effective treatment.

Dos and don'ts
  • Ensure sanitation and hygiene in your homes.

  • Keep the food items protected –Keep in mind that flies spread illnesses by landing on foodstuff before we eat it.

  • Clear away food and liquid leftovers immediately after eating.

  • Clear all the food debris from the kitchen area and ensure that rubbish bins have tightly sealed lids.

  • Ensure that drains are kept clean and running as flies and especially mosquitoes breed in standing water:

  • Treat drains that seem to have flown with bleach

The long-lasting solution

Despite taking so many precautions, it is often challenging to prevent mosquitos and insects from entering your homes. The effect of sprays can only be temporary. A permanent solution for protection against flies and mosquitoes would be to install mosquito mesh and insect screens on windows, doors, chimneys or any other open outlets in homes. The use of a mesh screen is quite prevalent. It has been seen that these fly fit screens, especially in windows around the kitchen, and waste areas are very effective in preventing insects from entering homes. Getting mosquito mesh for windows and insect screens for windows is not difficult. There are plenty of dealers and suppliers in the market today who can supply and install them in a hassle-free manner. Depending on your requirements, you can get the insect's screens right away from the supplier or dealer.
