How to choose RFID MIFACE chip?

As we all know, RFID chips are the main components of electronic tags and are at the heart of the entire RFID system. The basic structure of the tag chip generally includes modules such as a radio frequency front end, an analog front end, a digital baseband, and a memory unit. The RFID chip mainly involves frequency bands of 125KHz, 13.56MHz, 433MHz, 860-960MHz, 2.45GHz, etc. Among them, 13.56MHz high frequency and 860-960MHz UHF are the most mainstream, so today we will introduce the mainstream of 13.56MHz high frequency chip.

From the standard protocol, the 13.56MHz high frequency is mainly divided into ISO15693 and ISO14443. The difference between the two is simply that 14443 is near-field coupling, 15693 is far-field coupling, 14443 has encryption function, and 15693 has good penetration. Strong anti-interference ability. Of course, some 15693 chips have also added some encryption functions to expand their application range. For example, Huada Semiconductor 15693 has increased the national secret SM7. ISO14443 is also divided into two types of 14443A and 14443B, 14443B is more private, currently mainly used in the financial field, including ID cards, bank cards and so on.

MIFARE Classic

MIFARE Classic is the pioneer in contactless smart ticket ICs operating in the 13.56 MHZ frequency range with read/write capability and ISO 14443 compliance.

It started the contactless revolution by paving the way for numerous applications in public transport, access management, employee cards and on campuses.

Following the broad acceptance of contactless ticketing solutions and extraordinary success of the MIFARE Classic product family, application requirements and security needs constantly increased. Therefore, we do not recommend to use MIFARE Classic in security relevant applications anymore. This led to the development of two high security product families MIFARE Plus and MIFARE DESFire and to the development of the limited use/high volume IC family MIFARE Ultralight.

MIFARE Classic EV1

MIFARE Classic EV1 represents the highest evolution of the MIFARE Classic product family and succeeds all previous versions. It is available in a 1K and in a 4K memory version, serving different application needs. MIFARE Classic EV1 provides excellent ESD robustness for easy handling of the IC during the inlay- and card manufacturing and best in class RF performance for optimized transactions and allowing for more flexible antenna designs. MIFARE DESFire

The MIFARE DESFire family consists of the MIFARE DESFire EV1, MIFARE DESFire EV2 and MIFARE DESFire Light contactless ICs and is ideally suited for solution developers and system operators building reliable, interoperable and scalable contactless solutions. It targets multi-application smart card solutions in identity, access, loyalty and micro-payment applications as well as in transport schemes. MIFARE DESFire products fulfill the requirements for fast and highly secure data transmission, flexible memory organization and is interoperable with existing contactless infrastructures. The MIFARE DESFire ICs are based on open global standards for both air interface and cryptographic methods, and are compliant to all four levels of ISO/IEC 14443A while using optional ISO/IEC 7816-4 commands. MIFARE DESFire products are also fully NFC (Near Field Communication) Tag Type 4 compliant.

Featuring an on-chip backup management system and the mutual three pass authentication, a MIFARE DESFire EV1 product-based smart card can hold up to 28 different applications and 32 files per application. The size of each file is defined at the moment of its creation, making MIFARE DESFire a truly flexible and convenient product family. The MIFARE DESFire EV2 can hold an unlimited number of different applications only limited by the respective family member’s memory size. New applications can be loaded after the card has been deployed into the market. A purse can even be shared between applications, for greater interoperability.

Additionally, an automatic anti-tear mechanism is available for all file types, which guarantees transaction oriented data integrity. With MIFARE DESFire ICs, data transfer rates up to 848 Kbit/s can be achieved, making secure and fast data processing possible. The MIFARE DESFire products offer enhanced consumer-friendly system design, in combination with security and reliability.

MIFARE Plus

The MIFARE Plus product family brings benchmark AES security to contactless applications. It offers the benefit of a seamless upgrade of existing MIFARE Classic product-based installations and services with minimum effort. This results into the possibility to issue cards, being fully backwards compatible to MIFARE Classic, into existing system environments prior to infrastructure security upgrades. After the security upgrade, the MIFARE Plus products use AES security for authentication, data integrity and encryption which is based on open, global standards. MIFARE Ultralight

The MIFARE Ultralight family currently consists of three family members which provide system integrators with maximum flexibility for complete system solutions including but not limited to time-based, zone-based or multiple-ride tickets as well as single use tickets. Integrators benefit from the non-reloadable limited-use tickets through the appropriate use of its One-Time-Programmable (OTP) memory area in combination with the ISO Unique Identifier (UID) on a secure infrastructure.
