APAP stands for Positive Auto Airway Pressure and is based on the same basic principles as a CPAP (Continuous Positive Pressure) machine. Similar to CPAP devices, APAP machines are a non-invasive treatment for sleep apnea that delivers pressurized air through a mask, so your airways are not obstructed during sleep. The atmospheric pressure delivered by the machines acts like a splint, preventing your throat from collapsing on itself, allowing you to breathe freely all night without an apnea event.

APAP is one of the three main forms of positive airway pressure that provides air to your airways to help you breathe while you sleep if you have sleep apnea.

Like other PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) machines, the APAP machine is a device connected to a pressure generator with a non-invasive mask designed to provide pressure to keep the airways open while you sleep.

How it works: The air pressure provided by the machine acts like a splint, preventing your throat from collapsing on itself, so you can breathe freely all night without any apnea event. Most machines use defined pressure determined during a PAP titration study in the sleep center.

However, the APAP has two parameters, a low pressure setting and a high pressure setting, which allows the machine to automatically adjust to meet the breathing needs of each patient, which can change overnight when it goes through different stages of sleep. or changes in sleep position.

How APAP could be the right choice

  1. Several studies have shown that APAP machines are the most reliableAccording to the experts, APAP devices, compared to others, improve the distribution of sleep stages and offer comparable improvements in daytime sleepiness, as well as other forms of PAP treatment. In addition, APAP machines are a more popular choice among patients because they provide the appropriate pressure as needed.
  2. APAP machines adapt proactively rather than reactively

APAP machines can quickly identify airflow limits and avoid collapse of the upper airways. Once patients have fallen asleep and their pressure needs have begun to vary, APAP machines can adjust pressure levels according to the degree of airway obstruction, such as inspiratory flow limitation, snoring and apnea. APAP's automatic tuning feature can be especially useful for allergies, colds, or respiratory infections that result in increased airway congestion.

In addition, remember that each manufacturer has their own APAP algorithm and that each one operates at a different level, reacting differently to different breathing patterns. That's why it's important that you use a device with a clinically validated algorithm to ensure proper treatment.

3. Apap Machines allow flexibility

If you do not know which titration therapy is best for you, the good news is that APAP machines can also be configured in direct CPAP mode. If you suspect that self-adjusting pressure settings are not working and your doctor wants to try a single pressure setting, your APAP machine can be configured in CPAP mode.

Remember that Apap treatment may not be suitable for everyone

Avoid using an APAP device if you have chronic heart failure, central sleep apnea, or obesity hypoventilation syndrome. Since APAP machine algorithms may not have been calibrated to solve these problems, it is recommended that you follow the advice of your sleep physician.

Keep in mind that APAP therapy is not the one you have defined and you forget. If you are a patient, be sure to consult your sleep doctor. Your doctor can refer you to a sleep technologist who can help you solve problems such as adjusting the mask and moisture and help you stay in compliance with your treatment
