Questions to Ask When Evaluating Florida Moving Companies

Whether you are moving locally or long distances, you need to find Florida moving companies who can relieve your stress and provide you a superior moving experience. This is why it is important to get certain questions answered when evaluating a moving company. While everyone has their own unique moving needs, the following list is certainly a good start as to what you need to find out in order to make sure you are dealing with a reputable moving company

Are they registered?

The very first thing you need to ask the movers that you are considering is about their license details. While local movers should be registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), long-distance movers should have a registration number with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), called a USDOT number (US Department of Transportation Number).

What are their moving rates?

Next comes the price. Ask the movers what their moving rates are. For a long-distance move, most moving companies will charge on the basis of the weight of your belongings as well as the distance to be covered. If the company offers a moving quote based on cubic feet, do not hire them since they cannot give you precise estimates because the volume of your belongings is estimated by the moving crew that loads the truck. A moving estimate must be based on weight if you’re moving long-distances because this is an exact method for determining the cost of your move.

As for short-distances, some companies will charge you a per hour rate. Keep in mind that the moving company must give you a binding moving estimate in writing and they must provide you with a copy of that estimate. The estimate must include all charges and both you and the mover must sign it for it to be an agreement. The estimate must also indicate the method of payment and be properly dated.

Do they have a skilled crew or subcontractors?

You should ask the movers you are considering whether they have their own skilled moving crew or they subcontract to a smaller company. You should generally avoid this but if this is the case with the mover you are considering then ask for the subcontractor’s name and if, in case, the company uses several subcontractors, ask for a complete list. If the mover is uncertain, ask them to find out and get back to you. This information should be readily available and should not be withheld.

Are there any additional fees?

There are many cases when a mover may apply additional fees, so you need to find out about them to avoid any surprises later. Movers will charge extra for awkward items like a piano, or if your new home does not have easy access, or if your belongings have to be hand-carried over a certain distance or a flight of stairs. To avoid such costs, note any larger items and pre-arrange where the moving truck can park. If there are any stairs, and if you are moving to a condo or high-rise, investigate beforehand for any possible obstructions such as elevator usage and load restrictions.

Will there be any additional transfers?

While moving long distance some moving companies may transfer your goods from one truck to another. These additional transfers increase the possibility of damage and loss of your belongings. So when you are choosing your carrier, make sure to ask them beforehand.

What about Insurance?

It is very important that you have the proper insurance to cover your goods while moving. So make sure to ask detailed questions about insurance. Moving Insurance is usually based on the weight of your belongings, so you will need to assess the value of your goods versus what the insurance policy will provide should your belongings arrive damaged or not at all.
