Decluttering your home is not something you have to be a professional at in order to do it properly. But there are some tips that you can follow that will make handling the decluttering process easier and will also make it more efficient. After decluttering, you will notice that you have utterly maximized your space. We decided to give you some tips on how to declutter your home and maximize space.

First thing's first...

The first thing we need to mention is that there is no wrong time for decluttering. Generally, decluttering is advisable at least once a year. You shouldn't have to wait to sell your house or until it's springtime to declutter. Decluttering is a necessary step if you want to keep your home mess-free and looking nice and clean all year round. Now that we have that out of the way, we are going to tell you some of the tips you need to know in order to declutter your home and maximize space.

Create a sorting system

The first thing you want to do is get the necessary supplies and create a sorting system. The best sorting system is the "three-box sorting system". You will need three boxes for each room in your home, sometimes more for bigger rooms such as living rooms and rooms that have a lot of stuff like the kitchen for example. Make one box for the things that you will throw away, the second one for the things that you will donate, and the third box for the things that you will store away.

The third box might confuse some people because the point of decluttering is to get rid of the items you don't need in your home. But some things can't be just thrown away or donated. Sometimes they have sentimental value or are worth a lot but they simply don't have a proper place in your home. That is when you should take your excess belongings to a storage unit or a basement or an attic.

Go one room at a time

The best way to declutter properly is to go one room at a time. This way you will know what you decided to throw away and what you are keeping. If you declutter your bedroom first and then your kitchen and then you go back to the bedroom you will just tire yourself out and will lose track of where you left off. So take your time and declutter one room at a time. It is also recommended to split decluttering into two or three days of work so you don't over-tire yourself.

Where to start?

The next problem people have when they want to declutter is not knowing where to start. It is best to start with rooms that you don't use that often. These are usually attics, basements, guest rooms. These rooms aren't the rooms you use on a daily basis so it is best to start there. Attics and basements usually have the most things that are ready for throwing away. Plus, if you are going to be storing some more items there, decluttering first is unavoidable.

The next should be your living room. The living room is also another room where we store plenty of things that we don't need such as books, decoration pieces, CDs, etc. After the living room, the kitchen is the best place for continuing. Kitchen has plenty of useless things and the fewer things you own in your kitchen, the better it will be. What do you need 20 mugs for? Why have 40 glasses? These are the things that you should donate or store away. Maybe you can clean your kitchen in 10 minutes but you will need much more for decluttering.

The bedrooms and closets are next. The bathroom is the last on the list as there isn't a lot in the bathroom anyways.

Closet decluttering

Decluttering your closet is one of the hardest things to do. You always think way too much about whether you should get rid of that dress you bought a few years ago and never wore or keep it in case you want to wear it at some point in the future. If you don't wear it or have never worn it, it's ready for donating. You don't need so many things inside of your closet. You will complain about having nothing to wear even if you keep everything you already own. So it's much better to create some more space for new things. Plus, you will be helping a lot of people out by donating what you don't wear. Shoes are also something we tend to hold on to. So if they are ruined, ripped or old, throw them away.

Follow the 80/20 rule. From 100% of the things that you own, you use 20% regularly or at least often. The other 80% is useless. That 80 % of things either need to be thrown away, donated or stored away.

After you declutter and maximize your space...

After you declutter and maximize your space, your home might feel empty. This is the perfect time to treat yourself with some new things. This is one of many benefits of decluttering. Buy a new plant that you will put where you used to keep all those CDs or books. Get a new picture to place on your now empty shelf. Buy yourself a new mug for your morning coffee. You deserve to treat yourself after your hard work. But make sure not to make new clutter along the way.

After a few months have passed, it is best to go through all the rooms once again and check if there is anything new that needs to be thrown out. Do this every few months and there will be no need for the annual decluttering week.
