Professional etiquette is different from social etiquette and yet only a few business schools discuss about it. No matter who stunning your academic record is, it is important that you possess proper office etiquette training in order to rise up the professional ladder. From how to meet and greet clients to how to order in the restaurants when having a client meet, all are important and these few etiquette rules can be helpful.

  • It is better to use your complete name while introducing yourself but it also important for you to understand how others like to be introduced. If you have a very long name that is difficult to pronounce, then you can shorten it or you can even use a business card and consider giving it all your clients.
  • Make sure that you stand when you are being introduced. Standing helps in establishing your presence. If you are not being able to rise, then learn forward to indicate others that you would have stood, if you could. Chances of you being ignored are high, if you choose not to stand.
  • Learn to say ‘thank you’. Just say it twice or thrice in the entire conversation and prevent yourself from being portrayed as helpless and needy.
  • Send ‘thank you’ notes: It is important that you thank everyone separately within 24 hours and make sure of sending each one of them a separate thank you note. If you have trouble in deciding whether to send emails or hand written notes, consider the first option as it reach the destination within seconds. This is especially useful after an interview and when the decision has been taken quickly. This is important interview etiquette.
  • Do not cross your legs and sit. Many men and women do this but this is very inappropriate for an official setting. It is also bad for the health as the pressure on veins increases.
  • Do not point using your index finger. Use your open palm to point to others as using the index finger looks aggressive. Though both men and women do this but it is more common amongst the women.
  • The host is supposed to pay: No matter what your gender is, if you did the inviting, you are supposed to pay. Even if male guest shows interest to pay, considering saying things like that the company is paying for it and similar things. But there is no point in fighting over a bill and losing your
