Design Thinking: The key to innovative productsMost of us relate ‘design thinking’ with designers. However, the design thinking approach is a creative entity which belongs

to everyone who can innovate. From music, science, engineering, business to the field of literature, the design thinking

approach is practiced everywhere. It entails to solving problems creatively by exploiting out of the box techniques. What is design thinking?Design thinking approach is an iterative procedure of problem-solving by bringing out unique ideas. Here, the innovator

understands the users, consider the assumptions and challenge them, redefine the problems and then recognize alternative

solutions and strategies. This approach lays emphasis on the audience or end users for whom the services or products are being designed. In this way,

the approach allows the innovators to establish empathy with the target customers. The approach is categorized by brainstorming

sessions, experimentation, and testing where new ideas and concepts are cropped up and tested for their effectiveness. In this way,

the design thinking approach leads to the origin of innovative products.Phases of design thinkingIn general, there are five phases of design thinking:

  • 1. Empathize
  • 2. Define
  • 3. Ideate
  • 4. Prototype
  • 5. Test

Design thinking approach creates an innovative project by following these five phases. These phases may occur one-by-one or

simultaneously but each of these contributes towards a holistically ingenious product.

It is a customer-centric approach that lays emphasis on understanding and connecting with the end users. The innovators

empathize with the users to create products that cater to them. The needs, problems and the expectations of the end users

are defined to come up with the best possible solutions.

Design thinking is the key to pioneering products. The ‘ideate’ phase is all about challenging the assumptions and choosing

out of the box solutions. Prototype marks the beginning of creating solutions which are then put to test for its effectiveness.
