Tips for Choosing Between Clear Braces and Traditional Metal Braces

Every year, thousands of teenagers in North America discover that they need braces. Whilst they may find this news upsetting in the first instance, fixing their teeth as soon as possible is better for their overall health and can make things much easier for them in later life. Teenagers who need braces are now faced with the choice between traditional metal braces and ultra-modern Invisalign clear braces. Both procedures are excellent options from the perspective of a normal family dentist, and it will often come down to the personal preferences of the patient as to which type of braces they end up getting. Here are some tips about choosing the right sort of braces for your needs.

1. Aesthetics

Traditional braces are far more visible than clear plastic braces are. Whilst traditional braces no longer look like old fashioned torture devices, some people still don't really like the look of them when they are on their teeth. However, other teens enjoy the fact that they can choose bright colors or even have them customized before they are put on their teeth by the orthodontist.

On the other hand, Invisalign braces are made out of clear plastic, so that you can easily see your natural teeth through the braces. In fact, most people won't even be aware that you are wearing braces at all, because they will not be able to see them. However, people may become aware of them when they have to be removed in public to eat. If you are not careful, removal can be unsightly.

2. Cost

Good quality metal braces and Invisalign braces can come out at roughly the same price; however there is no "cheap" alternative to Invisalign. Much cheaper metal braces are available with a basic regular servicing, but these options will not include any additional enhancements and are likely to be the least aesthetically pleasing option available.

3. Maintenance

If Invisalign braces are not maintained properly, bacteria can build up on the inside and the outside of the aligners. The storage trays that they are kept in can also become odorous and unsanitary. Dentists usually sell these braces with special cleaning solution and offer instructions to clients detailing how best to keep them clean. If you are purchasing these braces for a teenager, it is important that they understand the need to maintain a high level of hygiene, as the buildup of bacteria in the trays can cause serious health issues.

Bacteria can also buildup around the brackets and wires on metal braces, and it is important that these areas are cleaned properly or else there is an increase risk of tooth decay. Brushing and using mouthwash will help to keep these areas clean.

4. Results

Both traditional and clear braces offer similar results for intermediate dental misalignments, and both require roughly the same amount of time to treat the problem. At the moment, metal braces seem to be slightly better at treating more serious misalignments, but Invisalign technology is still being developed.
