A supplemental health plan can be defined as a health care plan that covers all the costs of care that is above the minimum essential medical coverage. Supplemental health plans can provide added medical coverages, or can also be purchased to contribute to paying the costs that are not covered by the basic health insurance plan such as co-insurance, co-pays, and deductibles.

There are a few examples of supplemental health insurance plan types such as:

  1. Critical illness is a type of supplemental health insurance that provides cash benefit that is paid directly to you if you require treatment for a specific disease such as cancer.
  2. Accident health insurance is a type of supplemental insurance that would reimburse you for medical costs resulting from an accident. Benefits are paid to you or to your beneficiaries who are disabled due to a specific accident.
  3. Hospital indemnity insurance, provides daily, weekly or monthly cash benefits if you are confined to a hospital stay. The cash benefit is paid in addition to any other insurance that you may have.

Supplemental insurance pays benefits to the insured.l The amount of payment and how it is paid out depends on the supplemental health insurance plan or policy.

Some of the popular supplemental insurance plans cover policies for cancer, accidental death and dismemberment, Medigap, and accident health insurance.

Who should subscribe?

The questions linger behind our brain. Should we get it? Should we not? It all depends on your risk factors and how much insurance you want, or what you want to be insured for.

Supplemental plans are purely optional. It is entirely up to you to decide if the benefits provided by a plan are worth the cost in premiums that you will pay.

If you are interested in subscribing to one, firstly you need to understand the coverages available in different health insurance plans. Be sure that you check the coverage on your spouse’s health insurance as well.

This type of insurance will be very useful for you if your health insurance does not pay other expenses, or to protect you from additional expenses if something happened to you.

Consideration

If you have taken a look at your and your spouse’s health insurance coverage, and you are still going to purchase one, there are a couple of things that you need to consider such as your health risk factors, savings and how much insurance that you can afford.
