How to Get Rid of Raccoons from the Attic?
Posted: Sep 07, 2019
Raccoons love to live in the suburbs and cities, and this is the reason they always take shelter in human’s home. Typically raccoons choose to live on the attic as it is a dark, quiet and safe place for her. You cannot leave raccoons up there and wait for them to leave on their own. They are clever and will stay there until evicted. You will get to know about their existence through their scampering, scratching and walking noise. They are a real mess and can even tear down the insulation. All this can be really frustrating for humans.
Fortunately, there are humane methods to remove raccoons from the attic. The best way to get rid of them is to choose one of the best raccoon’s removal services in Hamilton, however, if you want you can also try out some of the ways to deal with them on your own. Let us learn how:
Step 1: Collect the Required Supplies
Get a metal trap from the hardware store. Other than this, you will also need spray foam, pinecone, peanut butter, and newspaper. It would be great if you can get wire (floral wire works best) and a long sturdy pole. You can set a camera to record everything, just for fun.
Step 2: Locate the Entry Point
Now, before we do anything else, you need to identify the area from where this wild animal entered the attic. First, you need to seal the entry point, otherwise, your all efforts will be in vain. Check if there is any gap in the vents or soffits, particularly around the gutters, attic fans or lights. Fill these gaps with expanding spray foam to seal the entry. This will prevent them from coming back.
Step 3: Set up the Trap
Take the pinecone and apply peanut butter coat on it. Then get a piece of wire, long enough to wrap around the around the pinecone, and then hang it securely to the metal cage. The placement should be such that the raccoon enters the cage to get it and press the pressure sensor that will shut the door of the cage.
Step 4: Place the Cage to the Attic
Take the cage to the attic and find an area where there is no wire or other obstacle. Then place the newspaper and keep the cage on it. If the animal remained there for a few hours, they will create a mess and might also urinate. It will help you clean the attic afterward.
Step 5: Wait for the Animal
Leave the cage and wait for the animal. You have to be patient with it. As they have no way out, they will eventually enter the cage for food. You can observe their activity on the camera.
Once the raccoon is caught, transport them far away from your home so that they don’t return.
If required, you can hire professional raccoon removal services in Hamilton for quick and effective service.
