THE SHELTIE DOG:

The other name of Sheltie Dog Shetland Sheep Dog. It is a breed of herding dog. The dog is originates from the Shetland Islands of Scotland. The original name of this dog is "Shetland collie" but this caused controversy among the rough collie breeders. The name of this breed is changed formally. These dogs are more intelligent, vocal, excitable, and willing to please. These dogs refers shadows due to their attachment to family.

APPEARANCE OF SHELTIE DOG:

It looks like smaller version of the rough-coated collie. Head of the sheltie dog is wedge-shaped. These are of black, blue Merle or sable colors and are marked with white, tan or both. Coat of these dogs is long and straight. These dogs are having small and three-quarter erect ears.

WEIGHT:

Male dog weighs between 6.4 and 12 kg and the female dog weigh between 6.4 and 12 kg. The weight of male and female dogs are same.

HEIGHT:

Height is same for both male and female dogs. It stands between 13 and 16 inches tall at the shoulder.

TEMPERAMENT OF SHELTIE DOG:

Most of the Shetland sheepdog have soft and sweet temperament. They are very peaceful with other animals and polite with everyone. They need more extensive socialization than many other breeds in order to build a confident temperament. Shetland sheepdogs are well known for being energetic and loving towards their owner. They are very loyal, but they can be reserved with strangers and new animals.

The sheltie’s lifespam increased due to advances in veterinary research, newer medications, improved diets and veterinary care. The lifespan of shelties used to be 12- 13 years.

FOOD FOR SHELTIE DOG:

Feeding sheltie with dry dog food is okay but the owners should be aware that shelties suffer from grain allergies, and they have sensitive stomachs. As these dogs are smaller breed they should be fed one meal during the day.

1. Taste of the wild: The main ingredient is buffalo. Grain-free, no corn, soy, wheat, fillers, colors, artificial flavors or preservatives.
2. Blue buffalo: The main ingredient is deboned chicken. Contains chicken and brown rice. No corn, no wheat, no soy.
3. American journey: This is high protein dog food. Salmon oil provide omega-3 and six fatty acids, including long-chain DHA, which helps for brain, and eye development of dog.

HEALTH ISSUES:

1. Hip Dysplasia: Hip Dysplasia is commonly occurring for large dog breeds. It can also appear in some smaller breeds such as Shetland sheepdogs as a genetic abnormality. Caused by a subluxation in the hip joint, which cause tear of the joint, leading to painful arthritis. This can be usually occurs in middle age.
2. Patellar Luxation: Patellar Luxation commonly occur in the small and toy breeds of dog. In this health issue the knee cap floats out of position, causing pain and difficulty in straightening the leg. This last for only 10 minutes but it is a recurring problem. Commonly occur in the middle age and cured by treatment involve massaging the affected knee. But in severe cases, they need surgery with a 30-60 day recovery period.
3. Weight Gain: It is very easy to overfeed a Shetland sheepdogs. One of the important thing is to prevent them from becoming overweight. Some commercial dog foods suggests larger portions than actually needed. This make sheltie overweight, putting extra strain on his heart, joints and bones.
4. Scleral Ectasia: The other name is collie eye or sheltie eye syndrome. This health issue prevents the eye from developing properly in the womb. This cause impaired vision due to loss of retina cells. There is no treatment for this health issue.
5. Dermatomyositis: The other name of this is collie nose. This is a commonly skin problem in sheltie dogs. This affect young herding breed dogs. The symptoms are redness, scaling, crusting, or hair loss on the face. This can treated with blank ink tattooed on affected areas. This other treatment is in the form of medication and diet rich with vitamin E and fatty acids.
