The Many Faces of an Engagement Ring Band

When the subject is bridal and engagement jewellery, there is little doubt about which component the majority of brides and grooms will be of the most concern. For certain people (men and women alike), the appeal of getting such a bauble is centred exclusively on the stone, and this tends to be the element which ‘makes or breaks’ this type of jewel in a social setting, as well.

More knowledgeable customers, however, will know that while the stone is undeniably important, half the appeal of this type of ring comes from the engagement ring band. While often neglected or overlooked by lovers putting together a bespoke ring, the band is integral to the ring’s look, whether as the ‘main attraction’ or simply a ‘supporting player’. Below is an overview of how this component can influence the final look of the ring when playing each of these roles.

The ‘Supporting Player’

Talk to many brides, grooms, or even bespoke jewellers, and they are likely to tell you that the most important role an engagement ring band can play is that of the ‘straight man’ to the flashy, attention-grabbing stone. Much as every successful comedy duo needs the deadpan, serious character to offset the zany star of the show, so, too, does a flashy, eye-catching stone benefit from an understated engagement ring band to complement it. In fact, as most anybody involved with designing rings will tell you, an already beautiful stone can be made to look even more appealing and attractive with the right band to support it. This is why so many designers advise their clients to take the time to find exactly the right material for the ring’s band, rather than just choose whatever’s cheapest or most popular. With the right, flattering band to support it, even a medium-range stone can be made to look like a Tiffany diamond.

The Main Attraction

The role of ‘second fiddle’ to a large and attention-grabbing stone is not, however, the only role an engagement ring band can play. Much to the contrary, in fact: ‘plain’ bands have been quite popular among a certain demographic for several decades now. In stark contrast to the flashiness and dazzle of rings topped by large stones, these understated and uncomplicated bands give off a quiet, yet sophisticated vibe, which many brides and grooms-to-be are attracted to. A ‘plain’ band may not rock anybody’s world, or even impress friends, but it has other advantages (less easily damaged, less garish, potentially less expensive) which have garnered it a rightful place in the engagement jewellery market.

It therefore becomes apparent that wedding and engagement ring bands should not be as overlooked, as they can have an important impact in the overall look of the stone.
