How Long Does It Take to Get a Job Through a Temporary Agency?
Posted: Sep 23, 2019
One of the most frustrating things we have to deal with, as humans, is that everything takes time. Patience is a virtue because it is so difficult to practice. When we want something, we want it then and there. This especially applies to finding a job. It can be so incredibly frustrating waiting for HR to read your resume, set up an interview, contact your references, and make a final decision. Plus, while you wait, you are still unemployed. This is where a temp agency steps in.
What is a temp agency? We are so glad you asked! A temporary agency is a company that supplies staff for their clients when they have short term jobs. These contracts may last a week, a month, a year, or however long the project takes. Businesses reach out to temp agencies when they need extra workers, have a project that requires a specially trained person, or have an open position that has to be immediately filled while they interview candidates.
Once you have decided to work with a temp agency, how long should you expect to wait to get a job? This is a difficult question to answer because it all depends on demand. The clients ask the agency for ___ number of workers and then the agency will contact their candidates. This means it could be a week before they place you at a job or it could be longer. There are a lot of factors at play here: positions, need, a supply of workers. It may seem a bit frightening that you never know how long it will take to find a temp job, but at least you are waiting for a position rather than seeing if a company will even employ you.
Temporary agencies are a great place to look for jobs when you are in the process of interviewing for permanent positions. You have the opportunity to work and make money while still having the ability to search for a permanent position somewhere else. Another way to explain this kind of job is when you are at a restaurant and the server brings out bread while you wait for your entrée. You can eat the bread as much as you want without affecting your ability to get your main course; all it does it fill the space between sitting down at the table and getting your food, but it still feeds your hunger.
What if you are unemployed but you do not know what kind of job you want to apply for? Temporary agencies are a useful tool for any worker who is unsure of what kind of position they are looking for. Since they only employ on short term contracts, you can experience different work environments and positions.
There is so much uncertainty when it comes to looking for a job and the length of time it will take to be hired. Working with a temporary agency can alleviate some of that stress by quickly placing you on short contracts while you wait and play the hiring game.
