Hydrochloric Acid Corrosion Inhibitor
Posted: Jan 07, 2020
Iron and steel, the most volumetric materials found in industries and utilized in their applications. It is considered that around three-fifth of the iron & steel materials are utilized in industries, construction and machineries. Often regarded as mainstay of the economy, Iron and Steel is referred to as a benchmark to determine the economic condition of a nation. Since the maximum utilization of their by-products like storage tanks, chimneys, building structures, pipelines, and machineries are related to broad spectrum applications, proper maintenance is always required.
Regarded as one of the strongest acid in terms of concentration, Hydrochloric acid is very corrosive and its corrosiveness increases with increase in its purity. The reason behind its corrosiveness is because of its reducing property. The chlorine atom contains single valance electron which easily gets liberated when comes in contact with electropositive metals, initiating a reaction which produces oxidized metal chloride and hydrogen gas. Some of these hydrogen being unable to form H2 molecule, gets induced in metallic body through absorption as H+ ion. This electropositive ion affects the chemical property of the metal, weakens it from inside and becomes the main reason for its degradation.
Industrial sectors prefer or rather depend on acidic solutions for cleaning and pickling applications. The acidic solution helps in removing hard solid deposits and even useful in descaling process of metallic surfaces. The problem with the acidic solution is, Hydrochloric Acid rapidly dissociate, forming excessive hydrogen ions which further reduces the pH value of the solution making it more corrosive. Since this acid is commonly used for pickling and cleaning metallic surfaces, sometimes the hydrogen ion gets deposited at places causing a reduction reaction with metal, degrading it from the place. This process follows on repeated use of the solution resulting in weakening of metal and corroding it. Even stainless steel, being an alloy gets corroded, irregularly pitted and cracked when hydrochloric acid comes in contact with it. Therefore, an inhibitor should always be used before hand in order to protect the metallic surface and internals during cleaning, pickling and other acidic utilization.
pH refers to the power or rather potential of hydrogen. It is used for quantification of acidity or alkalinity of a chemical in terms of concentration of Hydrogen Ion (H+).
Hydrochloric Acid Corrosion Inhibitor is a concentrated inhibitor blend formulated to inhibit corrosive actions of Hydrochloric acid. It contains a highly effective combination of surfactants, solvents and dispersants that enables it to provide corrosion protection in hydrochloric acid even at high temperatures. The mechanism behind the inhibition is through the diffusion from the bulk solution to the metal surface and absorption into the surface creating a protective layer to limit the contact of the acid with the base metal.
Chemtex Speciality Limited manufactures Acid Corrosion Inhibitor under the brand name Rodine, used for hydrochloric acid pickling solutions. At the time of inhibiting base metal attack and offering fume control, it imparts wetting as well as detergency. The basic attributes of these acid inhibitors are to prevent corrosion from over-pickling, lowers metal weight, acid saving, excellent rinsing ability, reduction in hydrogen embrittlement and fumes and hence these formulations reduce metal loss. The products maximize cleanliness on nickeled work. The precisely formulated Rodine is used for cleaning out steam generation equipment like pulp digesters, boilers and various other metalworking processes.
