With age comes wisdom and also follows the wrinkles. Even though those laugh lines and crow’s feet indicates a life full of emotion and expression, many find them a little less appealing the deeper they become.

What causes fine lines & wrinkles?

As you age, your skin produces less of the collagen and elastin. This makes your skin thinner and less resistant to damage. Exposure to sun, pollutants, dehydration, and toxins can all make your face more likely to develop prominent wrinkles. We may not be able to stop the years from flying by, but we don’t have to completely surrender to the visible signs of ageing. Wrinkles are indeed a fact of life, but with the proper treatment, you can minimize their appearance and keep skin looking deceptively younger; and who doesn’t want to look younger?

Although skin structure and texture are mainly hereditary, sun exposure is one of the major cause of wrinkles, especially for fair-skinned people. Other factors, such as pollutants and smoking, also contribute to wrinkle.

As we age, collagen-building is lost. After 40, one per cent of the skin’s collagen is lost every year. While in your 20s, you easily maintain skin firmness, keeping fibroblasts in place and producing a lot of skin-firming collagen, by 45, the fibroblasts that are still present simply do not function as well as they used to.

Are wrinkles and fine lines different?

Fine lines are small and thin lines that appear on the face, this is an indicator of first signs of ageing. We tend to find them mostly around the eyes and mouth as these are the areas of the face we tend to move the most with expressions.

Fine lines turn into wrinkles as you age this is because the collagen and elastin beneath the surface of your skin begin to break down. Wrinkles are normally deeper and in different areas of the face

How can I slow the progression of wrinkles?

  1. Protect your skin from the sun. Protect your skin from sun rays and prevent future wrinkles and always wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and sunglasses. Also, use sunscreen even during winter. Apply sunscreen liberally, and reapply every two hours or more often if you're swimming or sweating.
  2. Use moisturizers. Dry skin shrinks plump skin cells, which can lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles. Though moisturizers cannot prevent wrinkles, they may temporarily mask tiny lines and creases.
  3. Take care of your hands. Our hands are often the first part of our body to reveal signs of ageing, as they are the most used and exposed parts of the body. Protect the hands by wearing gloves, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
  4. Eat a healthy diet. It is good to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and maintain a healthy diet for healthy and happy skin.
