A Look At Some Of The Many Functions A Restaurateur Is Involved In

When you are in any sort of catering business you have many functions to carry out. It is not like being, say, a double-glazing salesman, where you just have one function: namely to visit prospective customers and sell them some new double glazing.

No, in catering you have to have a restaurant, for example, which you have to keep clean. You have to purchase ingredients, and these might change from week to week if you change your menu. It may involve visiting the markets, and at the very least requires time spent ordering ingredients to be delivered.

You have to ensure that you have enough wait staff to handle your customers, kitchen staff to cook the meals, kitchen staff to handle the washing up (of which there is a lot), bar staff to serve drinks, uniforms for front of house staff and kitchen staff, and if you are the head chef you have to do all the cooking. Those are just some of the most important jobs, but there are other minor details to attend to as well.

In fact, running a catering business is one of the most time consuming jobs there is because you have to be up early in the morning ordering food or going to market, and you have to stay behind after you have closed in the evening in order to ensure everything is washed up, put away, and ready for the next day. Sometimes it makes you wonder why anyone would ever bother.

And yet, it can be an immensely satisfying job to have, especially when your customers thank you for the perfect meal they have just enjoyed. And, of course, it can also be extremely profitable when you can make 200%, 300% or even 500% profits. Let’s face it: you can buy a bottle of wine wholesale for a fiver and sell it for £35 or even more, which is not to be sneezed at.

However, with all the hours you have to put in, anything that you can do to streamline parts of the job is to be welcomed with open arms, especially the less gratifying parts. Deciding on menus and creating new dishes is a fun part but washing up the dirty dishes isn’t. It is just what is known as "grunt" work – stuff that is no fun yet has to be done – and has to be done perfectly. You can’t have dishes and cutlery and glassware that is anything less than 100% clean.

Obviously, you need a dishwasher system that is totally reliable and deals with all the washing up fast. The simplest system is a conveyor system which will process all your ware quickly, clean it perfectly, and also dry it as fast as possible.

This is why many people choose the Fries Rack System for processing every type of ware, as it has been designed from the ground up to deal with anything that can be found in the kitchen – with the exception of large pots and pans of course. But all the small ware – plates, cutlery, glassware, cups, saucers, and so on – has been catered for. Dishwasher racks for glassware, racks for plates and cups and saucers, the dishwasher basket for cutlery, etc., have been produced with ventilated sides and bases so that the water in the dishwasher reaches every part of the ware in order to ensure perfect cleaning and fast drying. All of these have been tested and redesigned where necessary in order to be certain that they work as advertised.

There are some other clever innovations with the Fries Rack System too. For example, you can get an insert which enables wine glasses to tilt over to one side so that the water drains off the bases, which results in faster drying times. The dishwasher basket for cutlery comes in a single module for holding cutlery upright with the "business end" at the top for maximum cleaning, and there is also a module of four baskets which can hold different types of cutlery so that you can have knives in one section, forks in another, dessert spoons in a third, and so on. This enables you to clean small runs from, say, three or four tables, with everything cleaned in one go ready for the next customers.
