4 things to account for before attending a workshop

Truth be told, we are all locked in the 4 walls of our clinic, the same schedule, the same break shift, we do not have ample time to connect with others or have a social circle apart from our dental network. In a world of cut-throat competition, each and every dentist is trying to reach the top and stay on it. For this, Dental practitioners find ways to attend workshops and learn more and more to get ahead in the game.

Here are a few reasons as to why you should be thorough about a few things before attending workshops or CDE programs.

1.Meet and be impressed by the amazing facilitators:(oh...kay let me be the judge of it)

Isn’t this what we read in a circular of any dental workshop or a program, it's beautifully written in a flowery language, indicating how wonderful that workshop will be for you and how experienced the mentor is. However, it sometimes happens that what was said and what you got were two different things. Try to get testimonials from previous participants, reviews and ratings; after all, it's your hard-earned money you are putting in, not for leisure but for education.

2.Attending will provide more concrete teaching methods models than you can hope to use in your entire career:

Huh! so were the methods used by me previously were lacking fundamentals? We all know that this is absolutely untrue. We have been using methods taught to us by our mentors and professors in school and foolproof they created the foundation of our education.my point is to not fall into words like these, it is you who will decide whether you need to learn a specific technique and methodology, How expensive will be the equipment related to the workshop you are planning to attend? Do you have a patient population who will be open to your new technique? Is there a possibility of you investing in a new technique and realize it was not worth it? Will the mentor provide post-lecture back up?

Be clear to yourself as to how much you and your patients will benefit from your newly acquired knowledge.

3. Is your Mentor Accredited?

There is a sea of mentors outside and at a click of your mobile. Is the doctor you are planning to follow on, learn from is accredited from a board or not, What is their reputation in the dental world? Is he/she an educator or a businessman? These words seem to be hurtful at the moment, but once you think on a deeper note, you will realise that the medical and dental world has become very corporate and business finding teachers in the world of con artists is a blessing. Check the credentials of your mentor before signing up for a workshop.

4. Is the course you are planning under the curriculum?

Recently a circular was dropped in by the DENTAL COUNCIL OF INDIA,stating that courses on esthetic dentistry including chemical peeling, microdermabrasion and many more topics are not a part of dentistry, It is strictly specific to "dermatology" How many of you knew that? How many of you have done those courses? Is it legal to perform those procedures in your dental clinic or you need to have the presence of a specialist.Look before you leap and make your learning experience fun and hasslefree.
