The best group is a DM (Dungeon Master) that adjudicates rules and leads the game, with 3 to 5 members for an adventuring party. You can of course have a whole team of as many individuals as you want, but too many games at a table can make things incredibly difficult. There are great resources to locate party members if you have trouble getting a band together alone. If you want to build a certain level of strategic difficulty in your players, you could pick up some thumbnails and combat charts.

The Player's Handbook covers the creation of characters in depth and the Dungeon Master's Manual and Monster Manual have many helpful tips and information that will guide you on your own adventure.
