Why Students from India Prefer To Study Abroad
Posted: Oct 22, 2019
The world university rankings for the year 2020 are out and tell a sad tale for the state of Indian education. The rankings which are compiled annually by Times Higher Education (THE), which is based in the United Kingdom have been announced and not a single Indian institute has been featured in the top 100, 200, or even the top 300.
The highest ranking that Indian institutes have managed to shore up has been the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) Bangalore, which was ranked among the 301-350 group. The ranking of the institute has actually dropped 50 places from last year. IIT Ropar and IIT Indore have been featured among institutes in the 351 to 400 range. The other IITs, Delhi, Kharagpur and Mumbai could not even make it to the top 400 and were placed amongst universities in the 401-500 bracket.
Study Abroad Gains Popularity with Indian StudentsIn such a scenario it is not difficult to find the reasons for students from India’s increasing interest in studying abroad in countries like USA, Canada and UK. Apart from the poor academic quality and research options in Indian universities. The ease of studying abroad has also been a catalyst for the popularity of international education among Indian students. Previously students who planned to study abroad had to rely on relatives or friends who lived abroad for information about the universities abroad and the application process. However the wide spread use of the internet has helped many students to get the required information at their fingertips. Moreover many study abroad and overseas education consultants have sprung up which help students to ease their fears and get a guiding hand during the application process. In fact, a few study abroad consultants, such as Global Tree offer students a complete package that helps them to research the universities, select the university to apply for based on their profile and hand hold them throughout the application process and through the visa process as well. What is more, the students are also given support and advice after landing in their destination country. Universities abroad as well as their host countries are also taking many new steps to encourage international students to apply. Many of the top universities have specific programs that target Indian students and offer them scholarships as Indians have a reputation of being academically talented.
Countries such as Canada have put in place special programs for Indian students to make it easier for them to apply to universities in the country. Many countries have also instituted special grants and scholarships that are specifically earmarked for students from developing countries like India. In fact a few scholarships are restricted to Indian students. Apart from this many successful Indian entrepreneurs and business houses such as the Tatas and the Ambanis have instituted scholarships in their names for Indian students at top universities such as Stanford and Wharton.
The cost of studying abroad has also come within the reach of most Indian families with the reduced overall cost of international flights and cost of education combined with the rising disposable incomes of many middle class families. The privilege of studying abroad is no longer restricted to the elite few.
