You Can Remove Asbestos Yourself?

It is recommended that you hire licensed asbestos removal experts to remove asbestos from your home. However, in NSW as long as you take the proper precautions, you are allowed to remove a maximum of 10 square meters of bonded asbestos. If you are removing more than 10 square meters, you should hire an asbestos removalist qualify or obtain a license abolition of bonded asbestos NSW SafeWork that require you to attend a training course run by TAFE proper or registered training organization. Any loose or friable asbestos must be removed by a qualified asbestos removalist and can not be removed by the homeowner. Referring to the 'Safe Work Safe Australia Elimination of Asbestos 2nd Edition [NOHSC: 2002 (2005)].

Is it Safe to Remove Asbestos Yourself?

If you have to remove it yourself, you should take precautions! Removing asbestos can be a dangerous and complicated process. We recommend using licensed professional removalists which also will dispose of in accordance with government regulations NSW.

The important thing is this: if you need to work with materials that might contain asbestos, you should work so that there is the minimal release of fibers, dust or small particles of asbestos.

It is recommended that if you are considering removing or work with asbestos yourself, you are doing a training course to make sure you have the training to do so safely. Courses are available at:

Prepare Area

Lay plastic sheeting under the work area to prevent dust contaminating the soil. Use 200um thick plastic sheeting or bags; This does not have to be made from recycled materials or re-used for other purposes;

Move children's play equipment away from the work area;

Close windows and doors and seal vents to stop dust from entering into the house; asking neighbors to do the same;

Closing the other places where dust can, as under the door.

Close the door and use tape and plastic sheeting to seal off the work area from the area inside the house to prevent contamination of other areas.

Use 200um thick plastic sheeting or bags; This does not have to be made from recycled materials or re-used for other purposes;

closing ventilation, air conditioning and central heating ducts;

Remove soft furnishings, carpets and curtains from the work area, or seal them in plastic if they can not be moved;

Lay plastic sheeting under the work area to prevent dust contaminating the floor. Use 200um thick plastic sheeting or bags; This does not have to be made from recycled materials or re-used for other purposes

Move children's play equipment away from the work area;

Closing the other places where dust can, as under the door.

Stack & Wrap

Moisten all asbestos waste and double wrap in plastic and tape. Use 200um thick plastic sheeting or bags; This does not have to be made from recycled materials or re-used for other purposes. Clearly labeled as asbestos waste.

Note weathering. Surface weathering can cause the release of asbestos fibers from the roof. weathered asbestos products can release fibers when disturbed, like when the asbestos roof or gutters removed. All of the asbestos roof must be sealed before they are removed to reduce the risk of asbestos fibers are disturbed.

fire damage. The fire that damaged the property that contains asbestos products can lead to loose asbestos fibers. An asbestos contractor license revocation should be used for cleaning.
