About two to four out of every 1,000 children in India are congenital deaf or hard of hearing, making deafness the most common birth defect. Several studies suggest that hearing loss is important for the development of speech, language, cognitive, and psychological skills. Treatment can be very successful if deafness is identified early, preferably within the first few months of life. Nevertheless, one out of every four children born with severe hearing loss will not be diagnosed until 14 months of age.

When should a child's hearing be investigated? The first opportunity to test the child's hearing is in the hospital immediately after birth. If your child is not listened to before leaving the hospital, screening within the first month of life is recommended. If test results indicate possible deafness, seek further evaluation as soon as possible within the first three to six months of life.

Is early hearing screening mandatory? In recent years, the American Academy of Otolaryngology - health institutions across the country, including head and neck surgery - has highlighted the importance of screening all newborns for deafness. These efforts are working. Recently, several states have passed the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act. Some states routinely screen newborns, but there are no laws requiring screening. Therefore, check with your local authority or hospital for screening regulations.

How did the screening end?Two tests are used to examine infants and newborns for deafness. They include otoacoustic emission (OAE), and auditory brain stem response (ABR). Otocastic emission measures a sponge earring in the ear canal to measure how well the ear can respond to sound. In children with normal hearing, "echo" should be measured when the sound is emitted by the telephone. If no resonance is measured, it would mean hearing loss.

The most complex test is the auditory brain stem response. Earphones are placed in the ear and electrodes are placed in the head and ear. While the electrode measures how your child's brain reacts to the sound, the sound is emitted through earphones.

If an examination indicates hearing loss, your doctor may recommend a follow-up evaluation by an otolaryngologist.

Symptoms of hearing loss in children:Deafness can also occur in childhood. In these cases, parents, grandparents and other caregivers often notice that there is something wrong with the young child's ear. Even if your child's hearing has been tested as a newborn, you should continue to look for signs of hearing loss.

By no means react with unexpected loud noise,

Awakening is being done without any noise.

Do not turn your head in the direction of your voice,

Could not follow or understand the instructions,

Poor language development, or

Not speaking loudly or using age-appropriate language skills.

If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, report them to your doctor.

What if my child suffers from hearing loss?Hearing loss in children can be temporary or permanent. It is important to have a physician evaluate hearing loss that may rule out medical complications such as otitis media (deafness), excessive hearing loss, congenital malformations, or genetic deafness.

If your child's hearing loss is permanent, a hearing aid may be recommended to increase your child's hearing. Ear surgery can restore or in some cases greatly improve hearing loss. A cochlear implant can be considered for those who have some type of severe deafness that does not benefit from hearing loss. Unlike a hearing aid, the implant excludes damaged areas of the auditory system, which directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the child to hear loud and clear sounds.

Research indicates that if a child's hearing loss is cured by the age of six months, it will prevent subsequent language delays. You need to determine if your deaf child is primarily involved with oral speech and / or sign language, and wants early intervention to prevent language delays. Other communication strategies, such as auditory oral therapy, lip reading, and implicit speech, can be used with or without hearing aids or cochlear implants.
