Posted: Oct 27, 2019
Gardening is a rewarding hobby. Planting seeds, watering them regularly, tending to young saplings, taking care of grown plants – it is all a very delicate job. Gardening needs time and hard work. It teaches one to be patient. While working with garden equipment, people have to be careful. One wrong cut and it may damage a fresh leaf or healthy root. To have a garden in your home, one must be prepared for the long haul.
In today’s age, homes are getting smaller. Gone are the days of a big lawn outside your house. Nowadays, people are lucky to have a small garden in the balcony. And if not the balcony, there is also the concept of container gardening on window sills.
Be it indoors or outdoors, here is a list of the most essential garden equipment.
Spade
You cannot start gardening until and unless you have a spade. It has a flat blade with straight edges that is most useful in digging the earth. The tool comes with a short handle, making it easy to work with. The main job of spade is to dig. It is also helpful in breaking up tough roots and removing the top layer of grass.
Trowel
One more garden equipment for digging, a trowel is more specialized for digging small holes. It is primarily used while planting new seeds. It can also be used for weeding and to mix fertilizers in the soil. The trowel has a small handle with an arrow, pointed blade. The tool is shaped like a scoop and is helpful in transferring plants to pots. It is a multi-purpose gardening tool.
Rake
A garden rake is used to break up lumps of dry, hardened soil. It has a long handle, usually plastic, and metal tines on the end. Rakes can be used for removing fallen leaves, to clear pine needles, spreading the compost, and for levelling the soil before planting. Garden rakes come in many sizes. For home garden purpose, a small hand-held rake will be suitable for the job.
Shears
Cutting shears are a must-have garden equipment if you have big, leafy plants. They look like a rather large pair of scissors. It is used for cutting leaves, shaping hedge or shrubs, and to remove dead branches. While buying, make sure the shears have a comfortable grip to hold them. Being rust-resistant is also an added bonus.
Pruners
Pruners are similar to shears, but used for more delicate jobs. They are used to cut flowers, remove infected petals, trim leaves and branches, and to shape vines. Pruners are an especially important tool for indoor home gardens where there are smaller plants.
Hand Gloves
While gardening, using your hands is inevitable. One has to mix the soil, spread the compost, transfer saplings from one pot to another, and do more. Wearing gloves will protect your hands from any cuts, as well any harmful bacteria or pesticides.
Watering can
Plants need water daily. But the watering style has to be slow and uniform. In case of saplings, excessive water can dislodge the newly sown seeds. A watering can is useful for a smooth and even flow.
