The lungs of the world which are responsible for production of 20% of the planet’s oxygen are on fire. It is no less than a global emergency. Amazon forests are the world’s largest tropical rainforests and the farmers, land-grabbers and woodcutters torch tress and clear land for crops or grazing. For past one month, Amazon rainforest has been on fire and Brazil has declared a state of emergency in the region. The number of fires in Brazil has been the highest since the year 2013 and according to CNN reports the number of fires is 85% higher in this year than that in the previous year. If further reports are to be believed, there have been 80,000 fires in Brazil that have been detected by Brazil’s space research centre.

The critics have put the blame for Amazon forest fire on the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro as he was observed encouraging farmers and grazers to clear land of Amazon forests for growing crops and grazing animals. As the fire broke out, there was a cry of death all over. The farmers witnessed fire spreading from adjacent farms to their farms. Dead animals can be seen lying over burnt lands now. A picture present on the internet shows a snake creeping over the burnt land. Probably, it was searching for a shelter for itself. Death and loss of homes of wildlife spread with the fire. The smoke which results from the fire spreads in the clouds and resembles the clouds till thousands of kilometres from the location of fires. The fires do not affect the Brazil only but affect the population living worldwide and the wild life. Amazon forests are believed to be hosts to 10% of the known species of wildlife.

Attentions to the fires surged when social media users started mentioning about the Amazon rainforest fires and the related hashtags started trending. People around the globe took to streets and protested to demand action to stop fires. Foreign leaders began to speak out on social media and suggested and developed plans to put out the fires.

The Amazon rainforest is typically wet and humid. The region’s driest months are July and August. The activity of dryness peaks by early September and stops by mid – November. The fires set by humans in these months are likely to spread over large areas as it happened in the past month this year. Greenpeace has stated that forest fires and climate change operate in a vicious circle. In the words of Greenpeace, "In addition to increasing emissions, deforestation contributes directly to change in rainfall patterns in the affected region, extending the length of dry season, further affecting forests, biodiversity, agriculture and human health." Fires release pollutants including particulate matter and toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and non-methane organic compounds into the atmosphere. The smoke and the toxins released in the air can negatively affect the lungs and other organs of humans and wildlife. The skies over San Paulo, Brazil blackened for an hour on 19th August, 2019 which is about 17,000 miles away from the actual locations of fires in Brazil which include Brazilians states of Amazonas, Rondonia, Para and Mato Grosso. The state of Amazonas is believed to be most affected.

Brazil has deployed its army forces to put out fires. The warplanes have been dumping water on the burning tracts of Amazon. Many nations of the world have volunteered to help. The G7 nations decided to offer dollar 20 million to assist Brazil in putting out fire which has been reportedly rejected by the Brazilian president. Even now, there are so many fires burning out. There were rains in patches on some days in August but were not enough to extinguish burning fires completely.

The smoke and the dangerous gases and toxins released from the fires travel to miles away from the actual locations. These can pile up in the lungs of the people breathing that air. This causes inflammation, narrowing of airways, and inflammation of airways and production of mucus. It can also decrease the lungs’ capacity to inhale and absorb oxygen. Since Amazon rainforest produces 20% of the oxygen for the world; the supply of oxygen to the world has also decreased with burning forests. Your lungs need to work harder to extract oxygen from the inhaled air. The people living nearby are affected a lot but the people who live far away from the actual location are also affected.

In these hours of fire calamity, there should be considerable efforts to completely extinguish fires and to protect your lungs from the inhaled toxins and dangerous gases.
