Stop Struggling When It Comes To Training Your Dog
Posted: Jul 23, 2014
Having a dog can be one of the great joys in life. But when they aren't acting the way you want them to, they can also be the most frustrating. Don't lose heart; there are some effective ways to get your dog to behave. Here are some good ways to start training your dog.
Don't ever ignore good behavior from your dog. If they do something good, even if you didn't ask them to do it, make sure that you reward them for it in some way. If you start to ignore them when they have done something desirable, then they will see no reason to keep doing it.
Reinforcement is a key element in dog training. Reinforcement only works, however, when it is executed with the proper timing. Excitedly saying, "Good girl!" just a few seconds too late has little positive impact on the dog's future performance in terms of the desired act. Reinforcement for desired behavior should be immediate.
The diet you are feeding your dog needs to match their needs and activity level. The diet that is right for a working dog is a lot different from that of a dog that lounges around the house all day. Talk with your vet regarding what is right for your pup and don't forget their needs will change as they age.
As you begin working with your dog on their training program, make sure to pay close attention to their diet. Much like humans, a dog gets their fuel from what they eat each day. Having a diet that is not nutritionally sound can affect a dog's behavior and make training more difficult.
Have flexibility when training your dog. Be willing to vary or change a routine if it isn't working. You may need to try different locations or times of day. You may need to adjust the duration of your training schedule if it is too long a session, or too short.
Use the same command for the behavior you want him to demonstrate. Start commands with their name all the time. Use your dog's name to get his or her attention. Once you do this, tell your dog your command. Your dog will notice their name and they will see that you want their attention.
To train a dog careful thought is required by the owner. Before beginning to train a dog one should plan out what their command words are going to be to be the most effective. Words that are not commonly used will help them stick out for the dog. If one knows another language that can also offer more words and sounds to use in training the dog.
To ensure a well-trained four-legged friend from the start, make sure you practice consistency in all you do once you bring your new canine companion home. This means discussing all aspects of the dog's care, needs and training with all members of your household. A dog that is getting yelled at by one family member for urinating in the house while another family member just quietly cleans up the mess serves only to confuse and frustrate the puppy. If all members of the family treat the dog uniformly, whether admonishing it or showering it with praise, the dog will learn more quickly, and all family members will have the ability to successfully command the dog with ease.
A new puppy needs to be socialized to many different environments. Your dog has to learn how to behave around other animals and people. The best way to develop good behavior in these situations is to put your dog in the environment as much as possible. Devoting time to socialization early in life will enhance your pet's comfort in unfamiliar situations.
The best way to potty train a new puppy is to pay attention! Keep your puppy where you can see him always. If you notice him sniffing around or starting to circle, quickly pick him up and take him outside. These are signs that he is ready to go potty.
Make sure you listen to your dog. What is he telling you? Your dog's behavior will often give you a window into his mind. Destructive dogs are often bored or anxious. Anxious dogs may act inconsistently with strangers. No matter the trouble, your dog is telling you how he feels when he behaves in situations.
Consistently practice the skills your dog has learned with him. Give him a quiz where he has to perform all of his tricks, even if you know for a fact he does.
Try these tips and see how well they work. It will not happen overnight, but sooner or later your dog will start responding. This will mean you can relax a little. A great dog can be a great friend, but you've got to take a little time to train him first.
