In the age of digitalization, the demand of ecommerce websites is in its peak. Joomla and Magento have been remained the two market leaders since last decade in developing stunning ecommerce websites. Thanks to the PHP programmers who offered us literally TOO MANY choices for developing our ecommerce website. However, when it comes to developing a shopping portal, people ask for either Joomla or Magento. Why? Are they just biased about these technologies? No, there are several valid reasons. Here’s the answer. Just go through the article.

Are these two full featured ecommerce solutions?

Obviously, not! To say it more clearly, Joomla is basically a CMS (content management system) and no shopping cart feature comes along with it. To develop shopping portal, website design companies add Virtuemart, an extension, with the CMS to offer the shopping features. Whereas, Magento is a high end, dedicated ecommerce framework that comes with almost every latest shopping feature.

Then why do people choose Joomla for developing ecommerce website?

Every person who likes creative web design for their ecommerce website wants to choose Magento as their web platform. But, when it comes to paying the development cost, they become surprised knowing the difference. Yes, though both the framework is open-source and you can download it for free, the development cost of Magento is too high in comparison to Joomla. And, if you ignore the matter of adding the extension to the Joomla, you hardly would notice any difference in the two end-products.

Then choosing Magento is nothing but waste of money. Isn’t it?

Of course, not! Again, it may sound confusing. But, as we said earlier, Magento is dedicatedly designed to serve as a framework for developing outstanding ecommerce website. The security, reliability, performance and above all the scalability of Magento is overwhelming. If you are planning to develop a giant website with hundreds or thousands of products, you must go for Magento.

But, I’ve seen even costlier websites developed in Joomla. Why?

Very good question indeed! As we said that Joomla is a CMS and also can be molded as an ecommerce portal, it’s easily possible to develop custom and complex functions like adding events, bidding or blogging along with your shopping features. Thus, it has good acceptance among the customers like e-bay. However, if you are looking for a straightforward shopping portal, where customers will just be looking for the product catalogs, and not interested in other contents, then Magento should be preferred.

Well, I understood. But, what about the ease of use?

Of course, more features come with more complexities. In Magento, you’ll get hundreds of awesome features and functionalities for managing your online catalogs and thus, I would say, it’s not for the noobies. Whereas, being a CMS, Joomla along with Virtuemart is much easier for post-development management and any Admin with minimum technical knowledge can manage it easily.

How good it would have been, if we could combine Joomla and Magento together!

Yup, nothing is actually impossible in the digital world. There are tools available like J!mint, MageBridge etc. where you can use Joomla and Magento side-by-side seamlessly. You can enjoy both the awesome shopping features of Magento as well as the CMS of Joomla through these tools. However, only few web design company has enough expert programmer to do it efficiently. So, be cautious while choosing your IT vendor.
