7 Important Things To Think About Before Buying a Digital Piano For Beginners

There are so many digital pianos out there. Which one to buy?

Most people wonder this as they start window shopping for that perfect digital piano. Some seem good but are actually not, some have all the bells and whistles but you’ll never use it and so on. Some are actually good whether you are just learning or you are a professional piano player looking for a more compact version of the classic.

So, if you are still confused on how to find a digital piano that’s just right, here are some tips:

You need a full keyboard

You need a full, 88 key keyboard. These extra notes might be a bit pricier but they will pay off in big ways as you start learning and playing. At least don’t buy a keyboard which has less than 5 octaves - you will need a larger keyboard anyways.

Consider key size as well. You need to be able to play properly, so a width of at least 23mm is a good place to start.

Sensitivity and response

You need the weight and responsiveness of the keyboard to be similar to the resistance of an acoustic piano. These need to be realistic if you want to learn in the best way possible and also get some of the acoustic piano feel that’s much better than any digital one. Look for a piano with a counterbalanced keyboard and a hammer effect keyboard.

The quality of sound

"Always check the sound of your keyboard before you buy it to make sure it’s the sound that you are looking for," says Ronnie Bell, a music blog writer and editor at Essayroo.

The number of notes you can play at the same time

The basic pianos start at the 32 but the more expensive ones reach up to 200 keynotes. Make sure that your digital piano can do this. While you may not use it exactly with your fingers, you can use it with a sustain pedal that will make the sound much better.

Materials

Cheaper models have plastic keys and mid range to expensive models have synthetic ivory keys. This is important because the latter improve your grip and provides a realistic execution style. You’ll have a reduced difference between a digital and an acoustic piano. It’s also useful to get a piano with counterbalanced keys, touch sensitivity and so on so that they can develop appropriately.

How easy it is to carry

You need to think about portability, especially if you plan on moving your piano often. If you don’t plan on this and you have enough space in your home, you should go for the heavyweight versions. However, travelling or going to piano lessons will mean that a heavy piano is not an option. You can get a vertical, contemporary, portable and stage digital piano. Portable and stage are very easy to transport and provide a strong sound. Assess your needs before you head out to buy a digital piano.

Pay for what you’ll actually use

Before you start your shopping for a digital piano, you will be enchanted with all of the features that a piano has. Buttons, lights, sounds and so on will all speak to you and you’ll feel like you need them. In reality, those buttons will remain unused and you’ll end up paying for something that has no value to you. "Most of the time you will play with a piano regular sound, and the remainder of time you might play around with electronic piano, Jazz organ, nylon string guitar, bass and other familiar instruments. But if you really want to get those extras, you can get a metronome which you’ll find very useful, a split keyboard where you can play bass and chords at the same time" explains Alex Johnson, an arts blogger at Boomessays.

Even though a huge amount of information may be confusing to you at first, you’ll soon notice all the nuanced differences between different digital pianos and you’ll actually have a pretty good idea which one is for you. Just read through these tips and remember them as you start ordering online or going into your favorite store.
