Where to Find a Unique Engagement Ring Designer
Posted: Jul 23, 2014
The unique engagement ring designer has, in the past few decades, become one of the most sought-after merchants in Western society. By catering to a demographic which increasingly values individuality over rote commercialism, this figure has managed to regain some of the social importance and standing lost since the days of the booming of the diamond industry and has once again climbed the ranks of the Merchants’ Guild.
And as in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance periods, where each type of artisan occupied a different neighbourhood within the world’s major cities, so, too, does the unique engagement ring designer continue to reside in very specific corners of the major world capitals. If you need to find an artisan of this type but are unsure where to look, please read on for clarification.
Jewellery Quarters
The ‘natural habitat’ of the unique engagement ring designer is within the so-called ‘jewellery quarter’. The definition given to these types of territories is self-explanatory, and many European cities will have an area of this type. Birmingham, for instance, has one, as does London (the famous borough of Clerkenwell) as do several cities elsewhere in the world, such as Amsterdam, Paris and Los Angeles.
These are, of course, the main places in which to find bespoke designers, as they tend to cluster their businesses and studios in this type of neighbourhood. Clerkenwell is a good example. A visitor to this neighbourhood in London is likely to be overwhelmed with the number of boutique jewellery stores and studios per square metre.
Most of these neighbourhoods are remnants from historic periods, although occasionally they will have been established more recently. In yet other cases, such as the downtown area of Lisbon, Portugal, streets are still named after the main trade which used to be held there (Gold Street, Silver Street, etc.), even though the businesses and workshops in question have long moved away.
Sometimes, however, finding a unique engagement ring designer can be a little bit trickier. In cities which do not boast a jewellery quarter or another area dedicated to this type of trade, a visitor’s best bet may be to look for the neighbourhoods and boroughs best known for being hubs of creativity and arts; designers are, for the most part, artists, and will therefore be more at ease among those of their own kind. Therefore, their studios are more likely to be located in areas that other artists also frequent, and potential customers would do well to look there.
It is evident, then, that while a bespoke jeweller may be an elusive creature, he or she is by no means impossible to find.
