Sears Recalls Kenmore Countertop Microwave Ovens for Faulty Wiring

Sears has recalled Kenmore Elite microwaves because faulty wiring can result in the exterior of the countertop microwave getting hot enough to cause a burn. So far, no incidents have been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which issued the recall notice.

Consumer Reports tests microwaves, including Kenmore and Kenmore Elite countertop models, but did not test this particular model, which was sold only at Sears and Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores from May through July.

If you have this microwave in your home, please check the date of manufacture to determine if it is one of the recalled products, says Don Huber, Consumer Reports director of product safety. If it is, stop using the microwave and contact Sears for a repair.

In Consumer Reports member survey on appliance reliability, Kenmore and Kenmore Elite countertop microwaves earn a rating of Good for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Predicted reliability reflects how likely a microwave is to break or experience problems within the first five years of ownership, and owner satisfaction is a measure of how likely an owner is to recommend the brand.

The brand name is printed near the bottom of the door.

The risk: orrect wiring can cause the microwave’s exterior to reach temperatures exceeding ° F, posing a burn hazard to the user.
