Norethisterone is a medicine that is classified as progesterone medicines- it is prescribed for a number of uses in women. The medicine can be used in treating various menstrual cycle-related disorders. It contains a hormone similar to progesterone that occurs naturally in the body. It can be prescribed for women with breast cancer among other medical uses.

Various dosage levels can be used for different conditions in women:

Low doses can be used in pregnancy prevention as well as hormone replacement therapy; for a medium-strength dose, it can be used for treating menorrhagia (heavy periods); high-strength tablet doses can be used in treating various cancers in women such as breast cancer.

The progesterone hormone contained in the Norethisterone tablets helps to delay periods and correct the above conditions. Since progesterone is produced after fertilization, this medicine works in a similar manner to cause delayed periods in females. This can be for as long as 17 days.

It helps to thicken the cervical mucus to prevent easy sperm crossing for fertilization, alters the uterine lining to avoid implantation and decreases the progesterone and estrogen production in the body. This way, the medication helps to prevent pregnancy and treat various menstrual cycle issues.

This is a progesterone-only oral contraceptive pill.
