The need for an organ transplant can only be met by the process of organ donation after brain death. Nevertheless, the rate of organ donors in our country is far less fair because of the myths and confusion surrounding organ donation.

An organ donor can save upto 8 lives in his life by donating his functional organs. The Organ Donation Day campaign, which is celebrated every year on August 13, offers a unique opportunity in everyone's life by committing and pledging to donate their precious organs.

The organs that can be donated include the liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, pancreas, tissues, skin, bones, eyes, nerves, bone marrow, heart valves, brain, and bone of the ear, the eardrum and the blood. Prior to the donor's death a doctor cannot decide whether the organs and tissues are appropriate for the donation or not.

According to the report, at least around 5 lakhs of Indians die each year simply because of the failure of their main organs. They still want to live their lives because they are not fully satisfied with their lives and want to live more, but simply because of the natural calamities or sudden failure of their organs they cannot do so. At this situation, organ transplantation could play a major role in their life by increasing their lifetime more than expected. The organ donor plays the role of God in the life of an organ recipient.Organ donation is a voluntary process. Once a person decides to become an organ donor they can fill an online form available in NGOs and nearby hospitals and sign up to indicate their intention to donate. Once registered, they will get a donor card. But the card is not legally binding and the final consent to donate is taken by family members.

If you want your body part to live even after your death, please move forward and support this humanitarian cause. Apart from hospitals, there are many volunteer organizations in India where you can enlist yourself to become an organ donor.

ORGAN India is a Delhi based NGO, initiated by The Parashar Foundation in March 2013. It is formed with the intention to make a difference in the lives of thousands of people, by providing them donated organs. ORGAN India envisioned to address and reform the gloomy state of deceased organ donation in India.

For the Parashar Foundation, it is a goal that stems from a personal struggle of one of its members. Kirti Parashar, Ashok Parashar’s wife, who needed a heart transplant. She had the means, the best doctors and a family who supported her. But there was no heart to be found in Delhi and the wait could have been endless. Kirti Parashar moved to Chennai (which has a well- organised network in place), to wait for a new heart, which she got on December 13 after a four month wait! She could afford to move and wait. ORGAN India was formed for the people of India who don’t have the option of leaving their jobs and lives and moving to another city in search of an organ transplant.
