Dr. Daniel Taheri is a renowned dermatologist and skin cancer surgeon. Recently, he was on NBC talking about the use of ultraviolet tanning beds and the link to cancer. After many years offering treatment to patients with cancer, the doctor has learnt a lot about the condition. He is also an expert on a wide host of skin diseases. Therefore, he decided to lend his opinion to the big debate about tanning.

Dr. Taheri warns that tanning beds greatly increase the risk of cancer. There are three types of ultraviolet rays; UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA are the most dangerous while UVC rays are quite mild. The rays emitted by lamps in tanning beds are UVA rays. These are dangerous to the skin and have been identified even in previous studies as a major cause of skin cancer.

Dr. Daniel Taheri says that these rays do not just result in a tan on the surface but also penetrate deeper. This results in damage to the collagen which makes the skin prone to cancerous lesions. In addition to being a risk factor for cancer, Dr. Taheri also warns of the premature aging effects of tanning beds. This is fast becoming a major problem for many Americans.

As owner of LA laser center which is one of the best skin clinics in California, he has come across different patients. He says nowadays, people in their thirties and forties are starting to experience skin aging signs. These include wrinkles, brown spots and loosening of the skin. This can be attributed to excessive tanning especially if done over long periods of time.

In fact, Dr. Dan Taheri advocates for no tanning at all for children under the age of 18. At this time, their skin is still developing and should be allowed to do so without alterations. Apart from the tanning beds, he also warns about opting for the sun. Currently, the ozone layer is not enough to protect you from the dangerous UVA and UVB rays. Consequently, even those who like to spend hours outside in the sun to get a tan should be warned.

Dr. Dan Taheri also points out that the ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds are not the only cause of skin cancer. There are other predisposing factors especially when considering the different types of melanomas that occur. Hence, apart from avoiding tanning beds, people have to take special care of their skin. This can be done through good nutrition and general healthy living. Looking out for skin discolorations and appearance of moles should be a priority.

If you notice anything unusual about your skin, it is best to speak to a qualified dermatologist immediately. This will allow you a chance to get proper diagnosis and early treatment. Skin cancer has a better chance of complete recovery if diagnosed and treated in time. For those who like tanning, not all hope is lost. Dr. Dan Taheri suggest spray tanning as a healthier option. This does not have any long lasting effects on the skin and will not cause cancer.
