Yes, you read it right. Most people don’t know that hard water is not safe to use on the hair. Hard water not just hinders with your showering experience, but also causes permanent damage to your beautiful hair making it appear dull, dry, parched, crunchy, and tangly.

What is Hard Water?

Water having high mineral content such as calcium and magnesium can be referred to as hard water. While drinking hard water may not cause serious health issues, it is harmful to your hair and skin.

How Hard Water Ruins Your Hair?

The minerals present in hard water build up on any surface it touches, and your hair is no different. Over a period, these minerals will create a chemical buildup in the form of thin later. As a result, hair weaken, eventually dry out and hair fall occurs.

How to Save Your Hair?

If you struggle with hard water hair, the good news is there are solutions to solve your problem and help you tame your mane.

1. Clarifying Shampoo

One of the easiest ways to fight hard water is to use a chelating or clarifying shampoo. Chelating agents remove every trace of hard water deposit in your hair with just a single wash. However, it is important not to overuse it. Twice a month will do the job for you or else excessive cleaning will dry out your hair.

After using a chelating shampoo, always use a conditioner that will help to prevent your hair from drying out. When buying a conditioner, look for moisturizing ingredient argan oil.

2. Vinegar

As vinegar has acidic properties, it removes mineral buildup from your hair while restoring pH balance. White vinegar will work, however, the preferred type for your hair would be Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV). It is loaded with nutrients that are great for building luscious locks. It also gently exfoliates the scalp and hair, removes dead skin cells, and any buildup due to conventional hair products.

3. Water Softener

The permanent solution to get healthy and strong hair is to wash it with soft water. Getting a water softener installed is the way to go. A water softener works to remove all the minerals from the water leaving you only soft water. It employs activated ion-based resin which attracts the calcium and magnesium compounds from hard water. As a result, the water generates more lather and is not harsh on your hair and skin.

Investing in a water softener is not only beneficial for your hair but for your water appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and plumbing fixtures. Not only will your appliances last longer, but you’ll also save a lot of money which otherwise would be have been lost due to maintenance costs, decreased efficiency, and frequent breakdowns.
