Necessity of a Coolant Flow Controller for Automobiles

Most modern vehicles and trucks operate with water-cooled power plants. In essence, a water-based coolant or fluid circulates through the engine and absorbs excess heat, which is then released to the environment with the help of a radiator. When used in cold weather, waste engine heat is utilized for the additional purpose of heating the passenger compartment; this is accomplished by passing the coolant via an alternative heat exchanger know as a heater core. This heater core heats air circulating within or flowing into the occupied compartment, thereby increasing its temperature.

Most often, this coolant is circulated by an engine driven pump. As the speed of the engine changes during vehicle use, the coolant’s flow rate in the heater circuit also changes. As the heat exchanger’s heat output is decided mainly by the flow rate of the coolant and the temperature through the exchanger, the heater core’s heat output also differs with engine speed.

Thermal management is the capacity of controlling a system and its subsystems’ temperature; for instance, e-machine, cabin, battery, engine, etc. An effective coolant flow controller is required within this system for closing the coolant flow, regulating the coolant flow, and switching over coolant circuits. This coolant flow control valve allows functions to decrease the engine’s heat up time via engine zero flow, allowing quicker cabin heat up by heading the heat to the heat exchanger core and for decreasing the coolant flow for an optimized temperature of the engine.

Proteus WeldSaverTM: A Leading Coolant Flow Controller

The Proteus WeldSaverTM is a leading coolant flow controller and leak detector for robotic welding applications. Whether you need to monitor the coolant flow to the whole cooling circuit for a weld cell or for welding guns, this coolant flow controller efficiently detects decreases in flow continuity made by hose bursts, cap loss, or any other catastrophic occurrence.

Let us have a look at the features of this leading coolant flow controller of Proteus Industries:

  • Prevents water in less than 1 second after hose burst, cap loss, or any other catastrophic event
  • Sends alarm to the weld controller in less than 0.4 seconds
  • Gives constant signal of actual coolant flow rate straight in LPM or GPM
  • Patented cap loss algorithm does not depend on flow measurement
  • Paddlewheel or vortex flow metering with NPT or metric connections
  • User-selectable alarm settings and operating parameters
  • Remote control of valve state
  • Relay interface, EtherNet/IP, and DeviceNet options
  • Flow ranges from 1.0 to 50 LPM or 0.5 to 13.0 GPM
