How to create a website with WordPress?16/02/2019 by Jawhar Abdul Rahiman

It’s easy to create a website. Shocked? I am Serious. Website creation is not a big deal. No need to be a techie to create a website with WordPress (Content Management System). We should have an idea of the website’s blueprint.

You might be thinking, "Without being a techie or without knowing HTML, JavaScript, PHP, blah, blah, blah, how can I create a website."

You should just have to understand what you read.

If you read HTML, will you understand? Definitely no, so I am not speaking about HTML.

I am talking about CMS (Content Management System).

When the website is created, then you can bring the website live with few steps.

Content Management System

In simple words, Content Management System is a website building software where you can create, edit and manage your digital content, without the help of HTML or JavaScript knowledge.

There are many CMS software where we can create a website in a small span of time. Website builder software like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Squarespace, Shopify, Magneto, Wix, and other many website building tools helps us to create websites if we are not a techie also.

As of now, I prefer WordPress, because it is easy to manage and all the websites I created are with the help of WordPress.

So here and in the upcoming lessons, I will use only the website builder software WordPress.

The main reason for me to prefer WordPress website building software is that it is so popular and in a growing stage.

According to W3techs, "WordPress is used by 59.8% of all the websites whose CMS we know. This is 32.7% of all websites."

Note: None stands for the websites or content management systems that W3tech doesn’t monitor.

Another chart provided by BuiltWith attributes 52% of the market share to WordPress.

There will be small variations from the research done by different organizations, but still, WordPress has the highest Market share among all the CMS.

Now let’s look at Website creation.

Website Creation

As you are done with purchasing the domain and setting the Web Host, now let’s design the website.

To Design the website you need to be a little creative, but as I said no need to be techy.

Now let’s look at how to create and use WordPress website

1. Add Theme

Log in to WordPress Panel> Appearance> Themes> Add new> Install the best theme which is suitable to your website.

Avoid adding low rated themes for your site, so that it won’t be affected by third parties.

And keep the themes up-to-date so that there won’t be any third party attack.

2. Add Pages

Now you should plan all the pages that you want on your website. Pages like About, Contact, Services, Terms & Conditions, Policies, etc.,

Adding Pages are based on your website nature.

WordPress Login> Pages> Add New

3. Add plugins

As you are not a web designer or developer, you can do their work by using Plugins. You should know what all Plugins are necessary for your website at the moment so that you can install the necessary ones. You can make your website so attractive with the right plugins.

It’s easy to add plugins.

WordPress Login> Plugins> Add New> then search for Plugins by the keyword, tag or author.

Add Plugins wisely. Do not add low rated plugins which can affect your blog by 3rd Parties.

Always keep your Plugins up-to-date, so that there will be improvements in the Plugins and it will be more secure.

4. Add Post

Adding a post is similar to adding pages.

WordPress Login> Posts> Add New

You can also add categories so that the posts can be differentiated.

Website’s Blueprint- 3 things to be noted while creating a WordPress website

You should have your website’s blueprint. Everything should be pre-planned while building a website.

1. Identifying the objective of the website

You should have a clear objective when you create a website with WordPress.

a) What are you into

You should have the same objective which you had when you selected the Domain name.

i.e) When you bought the domain name, you had the objective of writing a blog of Car’s review. So you should have the same objective when you build a website also. You should not plan for Car reviews and write about any other product reviews.

b) The Website theme and logo

Any good website which you have seen so far will have a color theme. It might be combinations of 2 or more colors in many cases.

And it should be decided before starting of designing the website.

It will help in creating a brand for the website also, so you should be very careful in deciding the color.

c) Structure of the websites

Create the website with different relevant categories and tags in WordPress, so that there will be a proper structure for your website. Even internal linking should be done in a proper way so that it will be easy for Google bots to crawl.

d) Revenue Channel

There should be a Revenue source for your website. Unless and until you don’t make any revenue out from your website or with the help of your website, then there is no use of wasting your time.

The easiest way of making money from your website is Google AdSense. As it is easy, you will get less revenue.

Try for selling some service or product through your Website which will help to make high revenue. Even affiliate marketing helps in making good revenue, but not as much as our own product.

2. Deciding on Number of pages required

It depends on the type of website which you are creating in WordPress. If it is just a blog, then you can make it simple with just the main pages such as Home, About, Contact, Categories, archives, and a landing page or lead box if necessary to get leads.

But if it is a small or big company website then other than the above pages, there will be pages such as Testimonials, Portfolio, FAQ, etc.

So it depends on the WordPress website which you create and it is objective.

As per Digital.com, they suggest 13 main pages which a website should have. Check out the article 13 pages which a website should have to know which all pages are required.

3. Planning for Engagement Optionsa) Promoting

Your content or product should be promoted so that people will get to know about it. Unless and until you promote it, a large number of people won’t get to know. When people get to know they will start to engage. So we should plan how to promote with an objective-based on the product, service or content.

b) Social media- Contest

Social media is the best option to engage with our target audience. But now the best social media platforms are getting saturated. There are large numbers of audiences on social media, but the contents being posted on social media are double the audience. So it becomes difficult for content to be visible to our target audience. Paid promotions might help, but still, competitions are high when it comes to paid promotions also.

So the best ways to make the target audience to engage with our products are by keeping contests in social media.

Contests like:

  • Photo Contests
  • Video Contests
  • Caption Contests
  • Like, comment and Share

These 4 are the most conducted contests which we see nowadays. It is a giveaway contest, where the winner will be rewarded. Here the company will get benefited by building its brand and by reaching a large number of audiences.

c) Interacting

Make time to reply to the audience for their queries. It might be on social media, on a blog or personal inbox. By interacting with the audience they will feel good and they will be happy to continue with us.

Interacting will help in engagement, conversion and as well as in building brand loyalty.

With the help of Comment plugins in WordPress, you can engage with users in the Website itself, just create user-friendly space for the users.

d) Great content

Content is the main and strongest thing when it comes to engagement. If the content or product is not worthy then the audience might not engage positively.

Unless and until there is great content or product; promotion also won’t be successful. It will just be a waste of money.

Take time to create great content that will be informative and eye-catching. Audiences will love to engage in such content.

e) Ask users to engage

People usually tell that, why should we ask our audience to engage. It feels weird.

No. You should tell them to engage so that it will benefit you also. With this benefit, you will build your brand and later you will be able to make lots of profit. I am not telling you to beg for engagement but just to inform the users.

Just ask the users to give their feedback or what they think about the content or product. By this, you will get valuable feedback which will help you to improve in the upcoming content or product.

Now you will be aware of how to create a website with the help of WordPress (Content Management System).
